How is this distinct from Category:Roman Catholics? Isn't "Catholic" generally synonymous with "Roman Catholic"? — ChristTrekker 15:44, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

In the West it is, somewhat wrongly. yes. However Wikipedia isn't owned by the US/UK/Australia. The Catholic Church contains several rites. The dominant one is Roman and all are in submission to the Bishop of Rome, but the others do not refer to themselves as Roman Catholic. For example Sister Marie Keyrouz refers to herself as "a Maronite from her family's side and a Melkite through her religious congregation" and so identifying her as Roman Catholic could be misleading even if she is in communion with Rome. Likewise some recent schismatic groups use the term "Catholic." It's understandable that this might be a bit confusing, but it is the way it is.--T. Anthony 10:32, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
