Cataño is a municipality (municipio) located on northern coast of Puerto Rico bordering the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent to the north and east by San Juan; north of Bayamón and Guaynabo; east of Toa Baja and west of Guaynabo and is part of the San Juan Metropolitan Area. Cataño is spread over 7 wards and Cataño Pueblo (The downtown area and the administrative center of the city).

Cataño is known for its industry, its ferry service that connects old San Juan, its extraordinary and breathtaking vistas along its shore of colonial old San Juan across the bay, and its many Protestant churches and catholic cathedrals. Cataño has a considerable number of Christians among its population, and because of it's large number of churches, it attracts worshipers not only from town but from the metropolitan area as well.

[edit] History

In land area it is the smallest municipality in Puerto Rico. The city was founded in 1927 as "Hato de Palmas de Cataño", but officially shortened to "Cataño" when it was established. The city is known as "La Antesala de la Capital" (the Foyer of the Capital) because of its location across the bay from the capital of Puerto Rico, the city of San Juan.

[edit] Anthem

By Carmen I. Guzmán & Nick Jiménez Olmeda

Benemérito mi pueblo
antesala de San Juan.
La quietud de tus playas
y la brisa de tu mar.
Saludan al viajero
y a nuestra capital.

Cataño, Cataño,
Serás por siempre ejemplar
cuna de grandes figuras
y de belleza sin par.
Cataño, Cataño,
vigilante de San Juan.
Quien te haya conocido
jamás te podrá olvidar.

Noble y querido pueblo
majestuoso e importante.
Te yergues en la bahía
aún en la adversidad
mostrándote ante tu gente
que nunca te olvidarán.

Cataño, Cataño,
serás por siempre ejemplar.
Cuna de grandes atletas
y de sabor musical.
Cataño, Cataño,
vigilante de San Juan
quien te haya conocido
jamás de podrá olvidar.

[edit] Transportation

Cataño's ferry service is known as La Lancha de Cataño, or the Ferry of Cataño. Despite what the name may lead to believe, there is actually a number of ferries, not just one, that operate on the five minute harbor route between Cataño and old San Juan and vice-versa daily. There is a large ferry terminal at Cataño, and tourists can enjoy the view of the Castillo del Morro and the large cruise ships docked at the old San Juan terminal during this journey.
