Castellan, Pembrokeshire

Castellan is a hamlet and parish in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is situated in the north of the county on the slopes of Frenni Fawr, 2 km north of Crymych. It was originally a chapelry of the parish of Penrydd, and constitutes a manor originally owned by the Knights Hospitaller based at Slebech. The ruins of their chapel are still visible. The parish includes part of the village of Blaen-ffos 51°59′58″N, 4°38′19″W. The northern part of the parish is now in the community of Boncath, and the southern part is in Crymych community.

The name is an archaic Welsh word meaning "little castle"^[1]. The area has always been Welsh-speaking.

The parish had an area of 373 Ha. Its census populations were: 82 (1801): 171 (1851): 171 (1901): 115 (1951): 162 (1981).

The percentage of Welsh speakers was 100 (1891): 100 (1931): 100 (1971).
