[edit] Battles

While Tomb of Samuel isn't exclusively about the battle, wouldn't it be best to categorise it as such until the point that the battle information is forked to its own entry? Cheers, TewfikTalk 22:36, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] First Indochina War

Hi, I've seen you have removed the colonies and protectorates from the French Union list (article head's warbox) except France, Vietnam and Cambodia. Actually this is a mistake. As you probably know French governments had forbidden the use of metropolitan troops for the Indochina War so they sent their colonial forces instead. These forces included battalions of Tunisian, Morrocan, Algerian, Senegalese (more precisely it was called A.O.F. for French West Africa), but there were French Indochina troops as well including Thai, Cambodian and Laotian. This is well known fact in Europe actually. Here is a list of the North African troops in Indochina -in English- you should have a look at it to understand what was the actual situation. Please note Morroco and Tunisia were not colonies like French Algeria was, as protectorates they had their own national flags. I worked on the French version article, there is a chart separating the troops by their homeland. Hope it helps. Cliché Online 16:46, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] casus belli

since you seems to be on casus belli you have to change the one of the Vietnam War article since the one used in the Indochina War was a cut and paste from Vietnam with additional Colonialism term. Paris By Night 12:11, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] French Expeditionary Corps (Italy)

Hello - Wondering about the title of this article. The use of (Italy) after the name implies, by Wiki military unit naming convention, that this is an Italian rather than French military unit. As redundant as it might look, French Expeditionary Corps (France) might be a better choice, or French Expeditionary Corps in Italy (France). Cheers, W. B. Wilson 03:10, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Division Sorting.

Hello Carl,

Sorry, I didn't mean to work at cross-purposes to you. If you wish to use your plan, go ahead. I started organizing the category sorting because it seemed that very many divisions would be listed under "i" (infantry divisions). I'll leave the sort order alone. Cheers W. B. Wilson 15:38, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hey, somebody noticed--thank you

Hi Carl--Thanks for your input on the Second Hundred Years' War. Do you have any other ideas? I know it isn't widely recognized but I've seen it used enough by significant historians and decided to "be bold." I tried to integrate it into Wikipedia, but I'm sure it could be done better. Baronplantagenet 20:20, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Somme

Yes, the first day of the Battle of the Somme was a bloodbath and produced a casualty list matched or exceeded only by the civilian deaths at Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden and Hamburg. I have no problem with your removing the word "contest" but, to be fair, its usage is as valid in combat as it is in tennis. --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 21:14, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 3rd Algerian Infantry Division (France)

Hello Carl,

Just added this article. If you get a chance, please look it over and edit appropriately. It is a stub at the moment.

[edit] Point d'Appui

hi that's me, do you know a fine translation for "Point d'Appui", (they were used during the battle for dien bien phu as Eliane, etc.)? i need this for the battle for paris. i found "pressure point" sounds weird, sounds like kind of surgery term. "stronghold" is not correct since it is "place forte". well if you find it let me know. takk. Paris By Night 17:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

p.s. and "outpost" is "poste avancé". Paris By Night 17:09, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Grand Alliance

Carl, I am 3/4 of the way through rewriting the WOTGA article - merging it with the WOTGA European Theatre article (which will be 'deleted') to form a single, hopefully better, article. I will also change the name to Nine Years War. All articles that use the name WOTGA or War of the League of Augsburg will be changed to the new modern name so we have some consistency throughout. It'll be ready in a few weeks. Raymond Palmer 14:49, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] French Army etc

I think my lead is better and more commonly used on Wikipedia. Have you even bothered to read articles on other non-English speaking armed forces for comparison? Carl Logan 13:30, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes. See the German Armed Forces for instance (Luftwaffe, German Army, etc). I think the French names have to be in bold, because, among others, they are the OFFICIALS names, used even by militaries of english-speaking countries, as well as historic names. Stymphal 13:47, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Albigensian Crusade

Having discussed the withdrawal of GA with LuciferMorgan, I give notice that I am sitting down with the three classic original source texts (Puylaurens, Vaux-de-Cernay and de Tudèle - the last in the Livre de Poche edition as the Martin-Chabot is long out of print) to add the missing inline citations to this page. I do not intend at this point to make any textual alterations, but if comments are made which are NOT justified, be prepared to state your sources now. Jel 17:08, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey Carl,

This is just a drive-by "Thank you"; over the past few months, you've made minor tweaks and improvements to various of my articles, and such work seems to be going unappreciated. I'd like to give you my sincere thanks for what you've been doing! Carre 15:07, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Newsletter n°1

Bonjour and welcome to the first WikiProject France newsletter!! It should become a monthly special of our project, but until the next issue, here are some points to consider for the month:

  • In an effort to determine the active members from the inactive, all members are asked to simply sign on my special userpage.
  • I have slightly rearranged and updated the Project page, putting all the featured lists in collapsible tables. This unclutteres the page and you only have to see them if you want to. Give your feelings at the talk page.
  • I have made a Wikipedia advert for our project, Image:Qxz-ad108.gif, what do you think? Personally I feel the words need improving ...
  • There are still map problems at Template:French commune - any help at resolving them would be greatly appreciated.
  • What about starting a monthly drive? We currently have no Featured Portals (except for the Basque Portal which really isn't French any way), so how about improving Portal:France??? I don't know what's exactly wrong but the criteria can be seen at Wikipedia:Featured portal criteria.

It doesn't seem like a lot, so I hope we will still have enough problems for nexts months issue. Salut till the next issue, ChrisDHDR (17:13, 10 November 2007 (UTC)).

[edit] Algerian War Genocide Category

Hello, my reason for the addition of the tag is not to say if it was or was not a genocide, but rather it addresses the fact that certain groups and individuals have claimed it as such[1]. It is a touchy subject, and one that tends to garnish an emotional reaction for either side of the debate. Atari400 17:36, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Churchill and de Gaulle

Hi. I reverted your change regarding the ordre, but I agree with you that the paragraph wasn't good and would need sources. The two men were rivals, as is evident by what they both wrote about each other afterwards, but the paragraph could still be better. Not sure about my own revert and if you change it back I won't object. Cheers JdeJ (talk) 08:43, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Good and well-motivated reply, and I agree with you; "rivals" is the wrong word. JdeJ (talk) 13:08, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Categories

Hi Carl,

I see you've recently recategorised a few stubby/start articles I created on French generals in the Peninsular War. Could you let me know what the "rules" are for such categories: when is a general in "commanders", and when in just "military personnel"? Just so I don't make the mistakes in the future, and thanks for correcting those details (and many others in articles I've written ;) ). Carre (talk) 17:02, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

Agent 47 has to deal with the French POLICE so it cannot be the GIGN (GENDARMERIE, Army). It's probably the GIPN or the RAID. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.83.73.194 (talk) 13:01, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
