Captain Beany is a celebrity charity fundraiser resident in Sandfields, Port Talbot, Wales. He was born Barry Kirk, but changed his name to Captain Beany by deed poll in May 1991.
He has become a local celebrity in the area around Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot for his charity fundraising activities. He has also run in local and general elections throughout Wales for the New Millennium Bean Party. To date he has raised over £100,000 for charity through participation in various events such as the New York Marathon. Captain Beany was also designated an official tourist attraction by the Wales Tourist Board. Beany also appeared on the TV talent show Let Me Entertain You. His talent was to sit in a bathtub full of beans and tell jokes in order to stay on stage. Captain Beany achieved the shortest time ever spent on the talent show. [1]
He also runs the Baked Bean Museum of Excellence, a museum devoted to baked beans.
He was charged and convicted of benefit fraud in 2005. He wrongly claimed £2,700 in incorrect support.[1]
