Canisius College (pronounced /kəˈniːʃəs/) is a private Catholic college in the Delaware Park district of north-central Buffalo, New York. It was founded in 1870 by members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It is named for St. Peter Canisius, a Dutch Jesuit of the 16th century, who spent his active life as an apostle to post-Reformation Germany. As of 2007, Canisius has 3,468 undergraduates and 1,389 graduate students. The freshman class of 2010 currently contains 755 students. The 58-acre campus houses 37 buildings. The school is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Canisius College consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services.

In recent years Canisius has made a huge investment to improve every part of the campus. Over $117 million has been spent in improvements in almost every building on campus. In the fall of 2007, Canisius College President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., announced the college’s plans to raise $90 million by the year 2010 for capital improvements and to enhance the college’s endowment. A Legacy of Leadership: The Campaign for Canisius College is the largest fund-raising initiative in the college’s 137-year history. Of the $90 million goal, $47 million will fund the creation of an interdisciplinary science center at the college in the former HealthNow building and parking pavilion at 1901 Main Street in the heart of the campus. The science center will enhance the college’s position as one of the nation’s top undergraduate universities for science education.

[edit] Fight Song

Canisius College March
On with a march, march, march to victory.
Our hearts are gay today, we're in the fray today.
On with a step, step, step triumphantly
We'll raise a chorus strong
To sing this battle song;
Go up, go up, go up, never say done to Canisius men
Fight on, fight on, fight on tho' you have won and won again
Cheer with a shout, shout, shout exultantly
Lift up your eyes to see our Griffin victory
Hail to you blue and gold, the victory is ours today;
With loyal sons of old our youthful hearts and bold
Will rush your banners onward through the fray
And fight, fight, fight on you Griffin men
ev'ry foe is put to flight;
And onward thru the fray triumphantly
You march in your victorious might!
