Camber Sands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Camber Sands

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For historical information on the area, see Camber article

Camber Sands is a seaside resort in Camber (near Rye), East Sussex, England. It is located on the estuary of the River Rother at Rye Bay, and is a popular seaside destination due to the presence of two nearby holiday parks; there are also caravan sites here. The largest of these being the Pontins "Camber Sands" park, the other being one operated by Park Resorts (which is directly opposite the beach). The Pontins park has been built the most recently, while the Park Resorts park has undergone some redevelopment, with the entrance being moved entirely.

[edit] Dunes

Camber Sands is of scientific interest and nature conservation due to it being the site of a large dune system, the only existing system in East Sussex[1]. The dunes and beaches were used as a film set for the epic war movie 'The Longest Day'.

[edit] Sporting Activities

Due to its large size and favourable wind conditions, the beach has become a popular kitesports location. Kitesurfing, kiteboarding and kite buggying are all popular sports on the beach. However, launching of kites is only allowed in the designated area at the eastern end of the beach near the Jury's Gap car park[2].

[edit] Cultural references

Camber Sands is namechecked in Pulling Mussels (From The Shell) by Squeeze, Diamonds and Pearls by The Holloways and Heavyweight Champion of the World by Reverend and The Makers.
In an episode of the E4 teen comedy "The Inbetweeners", they use the back drop and the story line of a camber sands holiday park.
In the early 2000's famous TV Chef Anisle Harriott used the beach of camber sands, to host his cooking show. He also used one of the many beautifull houses that are found along the coast.
