Cairo-Cape Town Highway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cairo-Cape Town Highway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cairo-Cape Town Highway is Trans-African Highway 4 in the transcontinental road network being developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Development Bank (ADB), and the African Union. The route has a length of 10,228 km and was first proposed in the late 19th century.

[edit] Route

The route passes through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. South Africa was not originally included in the route which was first planned in the Apartheid era, but it is now recognized that it would continue into that country. The consultants' report suggested Pretoria as end, which seems somewhat arbitrary and as a major port, Cape Town is regarded as the southern end of regional highways in Southern African Development Community countries. The highway may be referred to in documents as the Cairo–Gaborone Highway or Cairo–Pretoria Highway.

[edit] Missing links

The southern half of the Cairo–Cape Town Highway is complete but it requires construction in northern Sudan, where rough dirt tracks require off-road capability, north-western Ethiopia, northern Kenya and central Tanzania. Crossing the Egypt-Sudan border by road has been prohibited for a number of years, a vehicle ferry on Lake Nasser is used instead.

Much of the Ethiopian section passes through mountainous terrain and parts of the road may be hazardous as a result, although most has been paved, with just a north-western 'missing link' to be done.

The missing link in northern Kenya also requires paving, and at times this section has been hazardous due to the activities of armed bandits.

As Kenya has a paved link to its border with Sudan, ultimately a route through south-eastern Sudan to Khartoum may provide a shorter alternative to the Ethiopian route.

The gravel section through Dodoma in central Tanzania may at times be impassable, and the alternative paved route via Moshi, Korogwe and Morogoro may be considered to have a better claim to be part of the highway. However it too has also been poorly maintained in the past.

Between Chalinze or Iringa and Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia the highway uses an important regional route, the Tanzam Highway, also called the Great North Road in Zambia. This highway has the distinction of being the only link between any of Africa's five major regions which is paved, linking East Africa to Southern Africa. It is the most used of any such inter-regional road on the continent.

Except for passing through Ethiopia, the Cairo to Cape Town Highway roughly coincides with proposals for the Cape to Cairo Road in the early 20th century British Empire.
