[edit] Synopsis

The film is set in the 17th century and tells the story of a Jesuit priest and his young companion who are escorted in late fall by Algonquin Indians across what is now called Quebec, to find a distant mission in a Huron village. Most of their Algonquin escorts desert them, under the impression that he is a demon, and the rest of his party are captured by a party of Iroquois. They escape, and the priest eventually finds the Jesuit mission on his own.

[edit] Reception

Black Robe received praise for being a magnificently staged combination of top talents delivering a gripping and tragic story,[1] and has been rated one of the most meticulously researched representations of Native American life ever put on film.[2] Notably, the film includes authentic dialog in the Cree, English, Mohawk, Algonquin, and Latin languages. The film won the Genie Award for Best Canadian Film.
