[edit] Temple Freda

The Geocities site you are referencing in the Temple Freda article does not meet the Wikipedia standards for being a reliable third party site. The refernece used for the statement on Rosa Levin Toubin's is completely invalid because it does not discuss the contents at all, it only lists that she wrote something with that title. Most of the references you give do not really establish notability. There are a lot of things that are vaguely mentioned or listed in a bunch of places, but that does not make them notable. Also, I noticed you asked another editor for feedback, but then removed the proposed deletion without truly addressing the issue, waiting for an answer, or confirming that your citations were valid. However, as the notice has been deleted, per policy it can now not be restored. I will wait a few days to see if you can find better sources and improve this article before nominating it for deletion as an AfD.

You may want to take some time to read WP:CITE to learn how to properly reference an article (the method you are using to link to references is incorrect). To aid you in this, I have fixed the four citations in the article to help get you started. You may also want to read WP:VERIFY to learn more about what acceptable references are. I can appreciate your wanting to expand the coverage of Jewish Texan communities and it is certainly a noble pursuit. I hope you find those articles and the Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style to be useful in your editing.

Finally...I know you were feeling enthusiastic about the article, however I did remove all of your See Also additions as they are in appropriate for city, county and metro articles. You have already properly categorized it to connect it to its locality. :) Collectonian 01:02, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Members of a minority race, religion or culture are often overlooked by society as a whole. It is even more evident when taking into account the location of person/thing in question. Judaism and Jewish Temples in the US have generally taken a quiet behind the scenes approach to many things and issues in their respective community - this was especially true in the past in areas where they might not be as openly accepted. They were by no means an inactive force in the community, but rather they did not openly promote the actions and deeds they were performing. Sometimes this was done for the protection of themselves, but often times it was for the protection of others. Secondary sources such as the Bryan/College Station media or Texas A&M newspaper should be searched as well as the state's major dailys (Houston Chronicle, Austin-American Statesman etc) I know the chronicle offer free search of its archives back to 1985. While the naming of the temple after a non-biblical woman is indeed noteworthy, its connection with the community (even other jewish communities) needs to be strengthened. Is there documented information on the Temple serving the jewish students at Texas A&M University or Blinn College? There are almost 50,000 students at TAMU, someone or some temple must be serving the religous needs of the Jewish students. Nsaum75 04:14, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Leon Toubin

A tag has been placed on Leon Toubin, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as articles for deletion. If you can indicate how Leon Toubin is different from the previously posted material, or if you can indicate why this article should not be deleted, I advise you to place the template {{hangon}} underneath the other template on the article, and also put a note on Talk:Leon Toubin saying why this article should stay. An admin should check for such edits before deleting the article. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 4 under General criteria. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please feel free to use deletion review, but do not continue to repost the article if it is deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. We welcome your help in trying to improve Wikipedia, and we request you to follow these instructions. Karanacs 21:29, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Prods

I am sorry to slap so many of these prod tags on your talk page today. I had several of my early biographies deleted too because I didn't understand the criteria for deletion. It might be helpful to read through WP:BIO to make sure you understand the notability criteria for biographies. Karanacs 21:09, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of Jimmy Kessler

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Jimmy Kessler, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Jimmy Kessler seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Jimmy Kessler, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. CSDWarnBot 21:32, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Added reference in Jimmy Kessler article to Texas Senate resolution recognizing the Texas Jewish Historical Society and mentioning Rabbi Kessler being instrumental in its founding. Nsaum75 05:16, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AFDs

FYI, I will be taking those articles that you removed the prod tags from to AFD. Rather than inundate your talk page again, you can see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2007 October 23 (and some may appear on tomorrow's log, depending on when I have time to finish listing them. Please also note that when you place the {{hangon}} tag on an article you are supposed to put comments on the talk page as to why an administrator should not delete it. Karanacs 22:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Advice

Your articles on figures from Texas history all of them need reliable 3rd party published sources to establish notability, preferable from more than local newspapers. Material on amazon and other websites that has not actually been published by a reliable source is not usable for this, though it may possibly be used as an External Link. See WP:RS

If you are going to cite Harvey Frommer's book,or Weiner's, cite them as books-- as in a bibliographic reference in a college paper, not as the advertisement in Amazon. And since it may not be obvious, it is good to give the page numbers exactly. For the references you do have, please see WP:CITE for the various ways to format them so they show up in a References section.

This will give the articles a chance, but see WP:Notability for details.

[edit] Texas cemeteries

Hi Bhaktivinode. I certainly don't want to make you feel like I'm targeting you, but I've been gradually going through Texas categories and trying to clean them up lately, and I discovered the Category on Texas cemeteries today. Several of the articles, including B'nai Abraham Cemetery and Machemehl Cemetery, don't appear to establish notability at all. The other cemeteries in the category are either National cemeteries, on the National Register of Historical Places, or have been recognized by the Texas Historical Society, and these do not appear to meet any of those types of critera. Before I put these up for deletion, I'd like to give you a chance to establish the notability. You can respond here, on my talk page, or on the talk page of the article, but if I don't hear from you within a few days I'm going to nominate them. Karanacs 18:00, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

If you already have an article that mentions the cemeteries, then I'd merge any information that is not already included into the other article and delete the original article. Karanacs 21:32, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] B'nai Abraham Cemetery

I've deleted this page, but not for the reason you specified. Rather, I applied CSD:G7 - a page which hasn't been substantially edited by anyone other than the original author who requests its deletion. To request a page be deleted under those circumstances, please use {{db-author}}; the reason "Non-notable, info listed elsewhere" isn't generally a deletion reason. Stifle (talk) 22:22, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jewish Congress v. Bost

I noticed that you source each statement within the article. Meaning, you say, "the Houston Cronicle said...." In my opinion - and it seems that all articles are not written that way - that it is rather pointless. That is the point of the references on the bottom of the page. It also makes it a harder read. All the best, --Brewcrewer 15:30, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Levi Olan

I am very appreciative of the work you are doing on Texas clergy. I saw your recent work on creating a Levi Olan page. I'll try to add some stuff to it. However, I have never, ever heard any one - including hundreds of people that knew him - refer to him as "Levi Author Olan." Some might have used "Levi A. Olan" in professional documents (like "David E. Stern"). But I encourage his page to e simply Levi Olan and to make sure that "Levi Olan" links to that page (it links to the Temple Emanu-El page now). I haven't just gone in and changed the Emanu-El page listing because you are clearly doing the hard work on this and I didn't want to jump in especially without an explanation. (The Temple web site, I just noticed, refers to him as Levi Olan). Thanks and Happy Chanukah - JerseyRabbi (talk) 02:43, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I'll second JerseyRabbi: it's great that you're doing an article on Rabbi Olan. I grew up listening to his remarkable, inspiring sermons. For the record, his middle name was not Author, but Arthur (this should not be hard to verify). I'd suggest a move to "Levi Olan", with the full name "Levi Arthur Olan" in the text of the article. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emoll (talkcontribs) 03:48, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Leon Toubin

Hi Bhaktivinode. I noticed that you've recreated the Leon Toubin article. This was previously deleted (twice) because of notability concerns, primarily that his accomplishments do not meet the notability standards for inclusion here. The article as you've created it doesn't seem to assert any additional claims of notability. We aren't supposed to continually recreate articles that have been deleted. I'll give the article another day, since you have the in progress tag on it, to see if there is any additional claim to notability, and if not I'm going to request a speedy delete per the last deletion discussion. Karanacs (talk) 21:34, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

You're really on top of things if that you got published yesterday! I disagree that the article in the Statesman is enough to establish notability. The previous deletion discussion seemed to say that just being a caretaker and local community businessman wasn't notable; a single reliable source that confirms that he is a caretaker and local community businessman doesn't establish any additional notability; the article still has the same problem that he is just a local caretaker and community businessman. There are millions of people in the US alone who are caretakers of churches and local businessmen and may have a single mention in a newspaper; what, in your opinion, makes Leon Toubin stand out from all of them? Answering that question could help the article to establish notability properly, but I don't see anything. Karanacs (talk) 21:50, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I think you might have missed my point. Local newspapers often profile people of local interest, but that doesn't make them inherently notable. What makes Leon Toubin stand out from the rest of the church caretakers of the world? If nothing does, then he's not notable per wikipedia's guidelines. Karanacs (talk) 17:18, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Yossi Lazaroff

A tag has been placed on Yossi Lazaroff, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. [edit] AfD Nomination: Chabad of Brazos Valley

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, but all Wikipedia articles must meet our criteria for inclusion (see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Since it does not seem that Chabad of Brazos Valley meets these criteria, an editor has started a discussion about whether this article should be kept or deleted.

[edit] List of prominent people in Jewish Texas articles

Hi Bhaktivinode. I am a member of WikiProject Biography, and as I was reading through the biography of living people policy I noticed a point that might be relevant for some of your editing. The policy states that Category tags regarding religious beliefs and sexual orientation should not be used unless two criteria are met:

  • The subject publicly self-identifies with the belief or orientation in question;
  • The subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to the subject's notable activities or public life, according to reliable published sources.

I noticed that you have created multiple lists of prominent Jewish people from X location (within those articles), and that you have added religious categories to a lot of biographies. I spot checked several of the biographies, and there is no mention of the person's religion in the article, just a category and a listing on one or more Texas Judaism pages. Can you please correct these? Either the articles on the people need to have a reliable third party source that lists their religion and how that impacts what they are notable for, or the category tags and the listing on the Texas Judaism pages need to be removed. Biography of Living People source standards are higher than for many other articles, so most websites will probably not count. I know that's a lot of work for you to do, so I'll wait two weeks to let you help fix the articles and then start going through those Texas Judaism pages and removing people from the lists and categories myself. This is WP policy, so we need to be really careful! Thanks, and let me know if you have any concerns or need any help. Karanacs (talk) 19:36, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Babe Schwartz

Hi Bhaktivinode,

I just thought I would pass along to you that I've nominated Babe Schwartz to be merged into A. R. Schwartz. As per Karanacs comment above mine, I think we need to add additional reference material stating his "Jewishness", so that the categories carried over from Babe Schwartz won't be contested by anyone. Nsaum75 (talk) 02:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I agree and the other article is a better place to start so I have added a few references to justify reconginzing him as a Jewish Texan. I will look for references for other unreferenced statments in the article too. Take care. Bhaktivinode (talk) 13:58, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I apologize if I'm coming across as mean or attacking. I'm just a little frustrated to see another of your articles at AfD for the same reasons as the last set. You're right that Jewish and Texas topics are underrepresented on WP, but we have to be careful to create quality articles when trying to fill those gaps. Good luck!! [edit] Charles W. Machemehl

Hi, I've reverted your edit to Charles W. Machemehl, since there isn't really much to say about him as an individual, and there's more at the house article. If you can make it more than a stub, then I won't revert again. Corvus cornixtalk 23:15, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Cool, your edits look good.  :) Corvus cornixtalk 17:47, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sources and notability added

Hi Bhaktivinode: Shavua Tov: I have spent some time improving the two articles currently up for deletion. The Adas Israel Congregation and Adath Jeshurun Congregation articles, now renamed Adas Israel Congregation (Duluth) and Adath Jeshurun Congregation (Minnetonka) to differentiate them from other similar sounding congregations elsewhere, are now a full articles. They meet all criteria for such articles. I also wish to point out that this is proof of what can and should be done to improve stubs. Merely because someone has started a stub does not mean that the article of a place/person/event are "not notable" since not all people have the time and capability of working to improve such articles. There is no statute of limitations on how long a stub deemed to be significant can exist and it is certainly no reason to invoke reasons to eliminate them, otherwise why do we have stubs in the first place? It is requested that the nominations be withdrawn! Please look into this. Sincerely, IZAK (talk) 11:14, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Anthony or Antony Wolf(e)

Hi Bhaktivinode. I'm currently working on improving Battle of the Alamo and its related articles, and I saw a tidbit that might be interesting to you. One of the Alamo defenders, Antony or Anthony Wolfe, was Jewish. I've seen his story in several of my reference books, as his two sons were also in the Alamo; one of the boys was killed by overanxious Mexican soldiers, and the other died in the arms of his father as Wolfe tried to escape with him. Wolfe doesn't currently have an article, but I think he would meet notability guidelines if you'd be interested in creating one. If you'll look at Battle of the Alamo#References, there is good information about him in Nofi, Edmondson, and the two Groneman books. If you'd be interested in creating the article but don't have access to the sources, let me know. I have online access through Netlibrary and I can copy and paste the relevant passages for you to form into a coherent article. Karanacs (talk) 18:21, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
