Better in the Dark is the third studio album by Australian dance group Rogue Traders. It was released in Australia by Columbia Records on October 13, 2007 (see 2007 in music). The album was produced by band member James Ash — who has also produced the band's previous albums and the lead singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte described the album as a step up, a bit older and more grown-up.[1] Better in the Dark debuted in the top ten on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and is their second highest-selling album to date. The album has yielded three singles: "Don't You Wanna Feel", "I Never Liked You" and the latest single, "What You're On".

[edit] Content and writing

Band member Ash states that on this album they are more of a band and he felt the previous album was a studio record due to this album not having any samples.[2] The band did not want to repeat themselves, Ash states "We have a sound that is ours, and we had to be mindful we didn't lose any of our fans. So for us, 'Better In The Dark' is about growth, not reinvention".[2]

Lead singer Bassingthwaighte became part of the songwriting process on the album, co-writing on many of the songs with Ash and his wife Melinda Appleby.[2] Bassingthwaighte states "We'd sit in a room and throw ideas around. "It was interesting that all three of us instinctively knew when we had a great idea".[2] Ash states that many of the songs on the album seem to be about being in nightclubs and he did not realise that until they finished recording it, hence the title 'Better in the Dark'.[2]

[edit] Promotion and chart performance

The first song released from the album was "Don't You Wanna Feel", which was released to Australian radio on September 7, 2007[3] and the music video premiered on Channel Ten News on September 11, 2007.[4] The band performed the song at the NRL Grand Final in Sydney, on the Australian television talk show Rove Live and on special Australian Idol show 'Doing It for the Kids'. "Don't You Wanna Feel" was released on September 29, 2007 and became the band's fifth top ten hit on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, peaking at number ten and staying there for four weeks and being certified gold by ARIA.[5] The band also performed at the Cricket, Australian Idol (grand final and verdict show), NRL and many other gigs promoting their singles "Don't You Wanna Feel" and "I Never Liked You". Many of their songs from the album, including "On Your Way to the Disco", "Throw Your Arms Around Me" and "8th Wonder of the World", have been played during Australian Open and the Cricket broadcasts, and have also been heard in many fashion shops, including 'Cotton On,' 'Diva' and 'Jay Jays.

The album debuted on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart on October 22, 2007 at number four and was certified gold in its first week by ARIA.[6] The album fell out of the top fifty after spending six weeks in it and re-entered two weeks later at number forty-eight. The album has currently spent another eight weeks in the chart. On its fifteenth week in the Aria Charts, the album made a jump from number number thirty-two the previous week, to number twelve the following week in the Albums Chart[7].

"I Never Liked You" was the second single released from the album in January 2008 and peaked at number nine on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart.[8]
