Bet365 Gold Cup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bet365 Gold Cup is a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 3 miles 5½ furlongs (5,934 metres) at Sandown Park Racecourse in late April.
It is a major late-season handicap chase, and has been won by many top class horses. There are twenty-four fences to be jumped in the race.
The race was first run in 1957 as the Whitbread Gold Cup and continued with that name until 2001. The following year it became the AtTheRaces Gold Cup, changing to the Betfred Gold Cup in 2004 and to its present title in 2008, when the bookmaking company Bet365 took over the sponsorship.
The Bet365 Gold Cup meeting at Sandown Park combines both National Hunt and flat racing, and includes the Sandown Mile and the Sandown Classic Trial, both also currently sponsored by Bet365.
