[edit] Barnstars survey

Hi, if you've navigated here because I posted a note on your talk page about a barnstars survey, welcome! Your help is highly appreciated! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I'll be checking your talk page as well as my own (here) for responses. Thanks again!

There are a few typos and the "comments" thing isn't well explained. None of the information given helps me decide when to give a barnstar and It would be nice to have the option of not awarding the barnstar. Also you can't type something and then select another attribute or it clears your text, annoying. Lastly, many of the comments are so out of context it's hard to decide anything. Maybe if they were more general and there was some statement concerning the circumstance it would be better. Adam McCormick (talk) 02:34, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
The typo was on the explanation of the second section. I believe it was "xTalk" or some such. Adam McCormick (talk) 04:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
The typo is in the very first line of the para: annoncement --> announcement? OK, I'll probably fill up the answers by tomorrow or the other day. Is it OK for you? --Efe (talk) 08:15, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sugaar's comments

Sorry Bestchai: I can't make any sense of your poll. I would just give a barnstar when I think someone is doing a good job and all that data in your poll is just for me noise: something that doesn't make any sense. --Sugaar (talk) 15:01, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

In response to your question: one may have some areas of primary interest, for instance a WikiProject, and sees people doing a good job once and again in that area. That is a reason to award a barnstar.
Basically a barnstar is a token recognition that means "good job: I believe that you are really improving Wikipedia" in this or that way. It's very subjective, of course. But the case is that you normally have an idea of how that user is improving the project sectorially or overall. --Sugaar (talk) 05:10, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Poll doesn't make sense

I agree. I filled out the forms until I got to the first question, and couldn't answer it. So I stopped. I wouldn't look at any of that stuff to decide what barnstar to give. I'd look at the actual edits made, on a page that I was following closely. Eubulides (talk) 20:17, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

To answer followup questions on my talk page:
  • I wouldn't give a barnstar for edits that I wasn't personally following closely.
  • I'm not sure what is meant by giving a barnstar to a user I "don't know well". I rarely know who any of the users are in real life. All I know is what edits they make.
  • Yes, specific edits to a page are what I'd look at. I wouldn't look at any of the statistics in the survey.
Eubulides (talk) 20:30, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
To answer another followup question:
  • Everything mentioned in that question constitutes specific edits to a page, so they could count towards a barnstar. Barnstars are not given just for editing articles; they can also be given for editing FAC reviews, for example.
  • One way to learn all this is to edit Wikipedia long enough to earn a barnstar. It's not that hard. It's probably less work than has already been put into this pilot study. And it'd be more a more-efficient way to learn about Wikipedia (warts and all) than any further pilot study would be. Plus, there'd be a nice side benefit: some corner of Wikipedia would be improved.

[edit] ANI

Someone's been speculating on ANI, one of our many Administrator's Noticeboards. If you're interested, the case can be found here. Good luck. BoL (Talk) 23:22, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
