Berserker (Fate/Zero)

Berserker is a fictional character from the Japanese novel Fate/Zero by TYPE-MOON and fellow developer Nitroplus.
He is the Servant of Kariya Matō in the 4th Holy Grail War.

- Rank-up for parameters not including LUC and MGI, but loses the ability to speak and is unable to make complicated thoughts.

- Has magic resistance via protective ring, but rank is lowered due to Mad Enhancement. Cannot cancel spells but damage values are lowered somewhat.
- Protection of the Fairies

- The ability of calling luck with priority in dangerous situations, by the blessing of the fairies. Activation is limited only in a battleground where demonstration of feats of arms may be performed.
- Eternal Arms Mastership
- Rank: A+
- Mastership of the combat arts that had reached the point of being boasted as being unrivalled in one era. By complete unification of heart, technique, and body, can make use of full fighting ability even if under the effects of any kind of mental restriction.
[edit] Noble Phantasms
Berserker has three Noble Phantasms, blurred in his status page. Only one was later revealed.
- The black-armoured knight appears to have a Noble Phantasm that allows him to use any weapon (even objects like telephone poles, fighter jets, submachine guns or the Noble Phantasms of other Epic Spirits) as his own Noble Phantasm, which gives him the power to defend himself against Archer's Gate of Babylon and hold his own against Saber. However, this Noble Phantasm demands a higher level of mana from Kariya in order to materialize (several times higher than other Servants) and tends to be difficult to control because the Black Knight's presence is unstable as a result of Kariya's weakening body and the higher amount of mana required to materialize Berserker-class servants. It is based on his legend for his knowledge of mastering all weapons.

- The sword of the one who was once admired as the best of knights, it has a power that can match Excalibur due to the fact that the two swords share the same origin: both are artifacts crafted by divine spirits. A weapon that can be only wielded by the best knight of his era, when Lancelot slew his brethren with it, Arondight turned from a holy sword to a demonic one. Lancelot was summoned as a Berserker class so he wasn't able to use Arondight full potential in the fourth Holy Grail War.
- His other Noble Phantasm is the ability to disguise as other people, he used this technique while kidnapping Irisviel disguised as Rider in order to confuse Saber. It is based from his legend when he was disguising himself as his friend during a fight.
[edit] True Identity
Berserker's real identity is Lancelot of the Lake, as revealed recently in the Fate/Zero series. Until his identity was revealed, he had been known simply as the Black Knight.
Lancelot, known as the Knight of the Lake, had been loyal to Arturia, knowing both the king and the secrets of her sword well. Lancelot's downfall began when he loved Arturia's queen. Though the king was actually a woman, Arturia had married in order to present the image of a stable royal family before the kingdom and to maintain the illusion that she was a man in the face of the general public. Her queen willingly sacrificed her own life as a woman in order to fulfill the ideal of the stable government.
However, Lancelot and the queen fell in love. Though he wanted to take her away, Lancelot's loyalty to Arturia and his sense of duty to serve the kingdom prevented him from doing so. When political enemies of the king exposed Lancelot and the queen's affair, the queen was ordered to be executed. Left with little choice, Lancelot rebeled in order to try and save her. The knight, the queen, who had made her beloved betray his duty, and the king, who felt responsible for the despair her most loyal servant endured, all suffered.
Though Lancelot suffered greatly, he found that he could not hate Arturia, who had never blamed Lancelot for anything regarding the state of affairs they had become entangled in. In his despair, Lancelot desired to become a beast who had no worries; thus, when he became a Heroic Spirit, he became a Berserker-class spirit.

Berserker is summoned by Kariya Matō in the 4th Holy Grail War. Zōken Matō, deciding that Kariya was already at a disadvantage against the more threatening Masters in the war, instructs Kariya to summon a Heroic Spirit who had been Mad Enhanced, thus ensuring that the Servant summoned will be a Berserker.
During a mêlée fight between the Servants, Lancer strikes Saber with Gáe Buidhe and attempts to finish her off, though their fight is interrupted by Iskander. In the ensuing chaos, both Archer and Berserker arrive and engage one another in battle. They are evenly matched, with weapons of Archer's Gate of Babylon being effectively wielded by Berserker to deflect any other weapons thrown at him. Archer is forced by his Master to retreat and Kariya, unable to control his Servant any longer, is unable to order Berserker to do the same. As a result, Berserker turns his attention to Saber, who is saved by Lancer. Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi attempts to use a command spell to force his Servant into assisting Berserker to finish off Saber, but ends up retreating when Iskander interferes again by threatening Kayneth to join Saber to finish off Berserker, thus forcing Berserker to retreat.
During the battle against Caster, Kariya directs Berserker to fight against Archer once more. The Noble Phantasm of Berserker allows him to take control of a jet to use against his opponants. Berserker loses the battle as Kariya grows increasingly weaker from the strain of materializing his Servant and the parasitic worms living inside him.
Berserker has shown hostility towards Saber throughout the fourth Holy Grail War. When Saber tries to strike down Berserker with her invisible sword, she is shocked to discover that he able to catch the sword with his hands. This action allows Saber to realize that Berserker is someone who knew her in her time and Berserker reveals himself as Lancelot. After learning his identity, Saber loses her will to fight against him and Berserker moves to deliver the final blow. However, he stops suddenly, as his Master has lost all the mana he can supply to the Servant.
Taking advantage of situation, Saber impales Berserker and apologizes to him, revealing that she had wished to win the Holy Grail to atone for her mistakes during her lifetime and also compensate Lancelot's death. Berserker speaks for the first time and tells Saber that he had wanted his king to strike him down to atone for his sins like a faithful knight and fades away.
