Barry Beck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barry Beck

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barry Beck (born June 3, 1957 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a retired former professional ice hockey player who was drafted second overall in both the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft and the 1977 WHA Amateur Draft from the New Westminster Bruins. Beck helped the Bruins to the Memorial Cup in 1977. He opted to move to the NHL over the WHA, and began his career with the Colorado Rockies. He also played for the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings over the course of his career, and retired in 1990.

Barry Beck set a record in his rookie year for goals by a rookie defenceman while playing for the Colorado Rockies. Brian Leetch broke the record in 1989 with 23 goals.

While a member of the NY Rangers, Beck was often implored by broadcaster Bill "The Big Whistle" Chadwick to shoot the puck more often. The phrase, "Shoot the puck, Barry" is still known by many Rangers fans to this day.

Barry now lives and coaches in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Academy of Ice Hockey, where his experiences and achievements are causing a heightened sense of awareness for hockey in Hong Kong, where the knowledge of the sport was previously mostly within a small community. The Hong Kong Academy of Ice Hockey continues to run hockey camps and work in cooperation with other well-established organizations in Hong Kong to promote the game of ice hockey with the help of Barry Beck.
