Barabani (also spelt Baraboni) is a town in Asansol subdivision of Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Coordinates of Barabani are 23.73 N 87.02 E[1][2]
The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating latterite region. This area lies between two mighty rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared.[3]
Nunia, a small stream about 40 km long has its origin near Adra village in the Salanpur area, flows through the Barabani area, past Asansol and joins the Damodar in the Raniganj area.[4]

Barabani block has a total population of 110,393. Out of this rural population is 91,692. Males number 47,849 and females number 43,843. Urban population is 18, 701, with 9,924 males and 8,777 females.[5][6]

Dilip Sarkar of CPI (M) won the Barabani assembly seat in 2006 defeating Manik Upadhyay of AITC. Manik Upadhyay representing AITC in 2001 and INC in 1996, won the seat twice defeating Rudranath Mukherjee and Paresh Maji, both of CPI (M), respectively. In 1991, S.R.Das of CPI (M) defeated Manik Upadhyay of INC. In 1987 and 1982, Ajit Chakraborty of CPI (M) defeated Manik Upadhyay and Dhiraj Sain, both of INC, respectively. In 1977, Sunil Basu Roy of CPI (M) defeated Sukumar Bandopadhyay of INC.[7] Prior to that those who won the Barabani seat were Sukumar Banerjee of INC in 1972, Sunil Basu Roy of CPI (M) in 1971 and 1969, Mihir Upadhyay of INC in 1967, and Haridas Chakraborty of CPI in 1962. In 1957, Barabani was part of Jamuria assembly constituency and it was won by Amarendranath Mondal of Praja Socialist Party.[8]
Barabani is part of Asansol (Lok Sabha constituency).[9]

Barabani is in the heart of the Raniganj coalfields of Eastern Coalfields Ltd., under Coal India Limited. Illegal mining is rampant in the area. Barabani has around 23 illegal ‘bhattas’ (ovens) processing and selling coal.[10]

There is a rail track: Andal-Sonachara-Tapasi-Ikra-Jamuria-Barabani-Chinchuria-Sitarampur,[11] but trains have been stopped on this section from 1998.[12]
