Banduan (also spelt Bundwan) (Bengali: বান্দোয়ান ) is a town, community development bloc and assembly constituency in Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Banduan, along with certain other areas such as Manbazar, Jhalda, and Jaipur are part of the area of violent activities by Maoists, also referred to as Naxalites.[1] [2][3][4]

Banduan is located at 22.7833° N 86.5000° E. It is at an altitude of 307 m (1,010 ft).[5]The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.[6]

In 1833, Manbhum district was carved out of Jungle Mahals district. In 1956, Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956.[7]

In the 2001 census, Banduan community development bloc had a population of 83,673 of which 42,246 were males and 41,427 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991-2001 was 14.55% for Banduan, against 13.96% in Purulia district. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84%.[8]Scheduled tribes at 42,096 formed around half the popluation. Scheduled castes numbered 6,273.[9]

Banduan is an intermediate panchayat in Purulia district, with Chirudih, Dhadka, Gurur, Kuchis, Kuilapal, Kumra and Supudih village panchayats under it.[10]

In the 2006 state assembly elections, Upendranath Hansda of CPI(M) won the Baduan assembly seat reserved for scheduled tribes defeating his nearest rival Kamala Kanta Mandi of BJP In 2001 he defeated Birsing Murmu of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Lakhi Ram Kisku of CPI(M) defeated Sital Chandra Hembram of INC in 1996, Bir Singh Murmu of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1991 and Ramparasad Hansda of INC in 1987. Sudhansu Sarkar Majhi of CPI(M) defeated Panchanan Soren, Independent in 1982 and Buddheswar Majhi of INC in 1977.[11]

Banduan is part of Purulia (Lok Sabha constituency).[12]

Banduan and adjoining areas have been witness to violence of the Communist Party of India (Maoist). Villages in the bordering areas of West Bengal's Purulia district and Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district are in the grip of panic, a result of the spate of killings by the Maoists. ia. This is specially true of Banduan, Barabazar and Balarampur blocks, The former sabhadhipati of the Purulia zilla parishad, Rabindra Nath Kar and his wife, both CPI(M) members, were brutally murdered by a gang of armed Maoists on 31 December 2005, at Bhomragaraha village in Banduan block, nearly 17 km from the Banduan police station. [13]Maoists killed Madhab Das, officer in charge of Banduan police station in November 2003.[14]
