AUSCAR (Australian Stock Car Auto Racing) was the Australian counterpart of the American motor racing series NASCAR, starting in 1986 and continuing until 2001. The cars were designed to race on the paved oval tracks at Calder Park Thunderdome and Adelaide International Raceway, but were also raced on road courses. The cars were not pure space frame chassis, but were built on Australian Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon road car chassis. As a result, AUSCARs are right-hand-drive, and race clockwise at ovals, compared to the left-hand-drive anticlockwise NASCAR cars. As the cars became more obscure, cars reverted to American style chassis and race in the anticlockwise direction. Notable drivers include Max Dumsney, Brad Jones, Russell Ingall, Kim Jane, Mal Rose, Brendon Cook and Lindsay Weston.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the V8 Supercars and financial difficulties, AUSCAR was shut down and the drivers dispursed into other national racing series. You can now be given a joy ride in an AUSCAR on the Goodyear Thunderdome at Calder Park.
