[edit] History
The term is assumed to be developed by Asian movie stars and their requirement for well fitting glasses. European or standard glasses would generally fall down the nose, requiring constant re-adjustment.
[edit] Target Geometry
The bone structure on an Asian face is shaped such that the Asian brow ridge is on an even plane as the cheekbones. Because the eye socket is set farther forward, the nose bridge does not appear to be as high off the cheek bones as on European faces. When seen in profile, Asian eyes often protrude slightly forward and outward from the plane of the brow and cheekbones, instead of being inset under the brow ridge, as on European faces. These anatomical differences require that for glasses to fit Asian faces, they are propped away from the eyes, the brow ridge, and cheekbones by nose pads or nose rests that are longer than those designed to fit European faces.
[edit] Nose Bridge
The nasal bridge on the frame has been reduced in width to fit the smaller nasal bone.
[edit] Nose Pads
The nasal pads are larger, longer and are extended further outward to compensate for the low sloping angle of the nasal bone.
[edit] Stems
The stems are more rounded, to better secure the glasses to the head and give a comfortable fit.
[edit] Frame
The frame's curvature has been reduced to accommodate a wider face.
[edit] Other Eye-wear
Other eye wear has been affected by this design as well, such as work eye wear, military eye wear, sports eye wear, and technical eye wear. Not all eye wear has has the same structure as glasses. Goggles, for example, have a different frame, padding is provided by the external frame, there may be a strap in place of stems. The curvature of the goggles is usually reduced to match the desired fit.
[edit] Criticism
The industry has been criticized for being racist and/or direct in defining these specialty fit glasses as Asian fit, implying that they only fit Asians.
