Arizona-Texas League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arizona-Texas League

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Arizona-Texas League was the name of three former minor league baseball leagues that operated in the southwestern part of the United States.

The first league, in operation for the 1931 and 1932 seasons, was created when the Arizona State League expanded and changed its name.

The second league operated from 1937 to 1950 before merging with the Sunset League to form the Southwest International League for the 1951 season. The league did not operate from 1942 through 1946 due to World War II.

The third league, which ran from 1952 through 1954, included teams that broke away from the Southwest International League. This latter league changed its name in 1955 to the Arizona-Mexico League.

[edit] History

After participating in the Southwest International League for one season (1951), some former members of the second Arizona-Texas League (see above) decided to re-form the league the following season. The reformed league played through the 1954 seasons before changing its name to the Arizona-Mexico League when the El Paso Texans, the league's lone remaining Texas franchise, moved to the West Texas-New Mexico League. Although Mexican-based teams had played in all incarnations of the Arizona-Texas League, they were not officially represented in the league's name until this point.
