I can't find any evidence of any packaged spyware. It's open source. Can anyone prove me wrong here? There are plenty of ripoffs, but I don't see any spyware/adware. --69.142.38.54 05:02, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

The software is open source. I looked through it's source code and there is no suspicious code there. Other programmers can take a look. Any software not registered in a firewalls database will be blocked. Seems like Ares is catching up to eMule as the most downloaded project on sourceforge, though if you count the multitude of eMule spinoffs (both the mods at sourceforge and distros like VeryCD), I'm sure eDonkey still has a much larger user base. Still, for a program that is apparently very popular, I haven't really seen or heard much about it. Can somebody discuss more about the origins of the program? Was it very popular in its days of being a Gnutella client? VanishingUser 07:35, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

The reason you haven't heard a lot about it is that it is by far the most popular in Latin America. eMule has a lot of users in Europe and Asia as well as anglophone America, while Ares is very big in Spanish-speaking countries. That's not to say it's not used by English-speaking people, it just has a much larger part of the market share in Spanish-speaking places (in North America, people are divided between LimeWire, BitTorrent, Gnutella, Ares, eMule...)

Ares is considered spyware because it is a peer-to-peer file sharing program. That means those files come from someone elses computer. No those files can have spyware malware and even viruses if people have infected them with it. I'm a KCesy user, DLing with the Ares Plugin therein. In the article it states that KCesy & FilePipe have no problems connecting to Ares net but giFT does. Surely an oxymoron (as KCesy is a giFT front-end)?..._> MonstaPro:^{Talk:Contrib.} 14:01, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

"Ares Galaxy is an open source peer-to-peer file sharing program for Microsoft Windows. It is written in Delphi. Hmmm, doesn't seem very neutral to me at the end. You can't actually base those facts without testing everty P2P program available and even then, it's still biased towards Ares. Clyde4210 has been banned from peerevolution.com and sourceforge.net multiple times. The user claims one of the most used chat servers on Ares has a backdoor unyet failes to show any solid proof whatsoever. Does AE have any extra ports open? - No Does AE have any strange registry keys? - No Does AE show up as spyware on any scanner? - No There's over 2000 AE chat rooms, does anyone complain? - No What's happened here is Clyde4210 has been banned by the creator of Arca Eclipse in the past and is now removing everyone's websites from various search engine hits that has ever put him in his place. All websites listed have been there for years now or are brand new, and if you dont believe me check the history page yourself's. We (The PeerEvolution staff) believe all websites listed on this Ares Wikipedia webpage to be genuine and that they successfully aid users to find content such as the programming code posted on Devil Works. -- I can almost guarantee the user (Clyde4210) will modify this post and I think that shows enough "proof" (if that's what you want to call it) to show you all what I am on about. It is well known in the p2p community to have a backdoor that the designer uses for malicious purpose with his friends. I will ask that no "other Sites" be listed do to the fact you are setting people up to have there computers maliciously vandalized by a designer who does it for laughs. it uses an ip to backdoor. 12. something i have it here somewhere. Why not submit the source code to a neutral programer for scrutitny to prove it doesn't. Further more i was banned from peerevo for confronting several well known board members and moderators for explicitly discussing sex (how the would love to sodomize) a 12 girl. I was asked to apologize for announcing on it peerevo board. I refused then and i refuse now. Peerevo condoned the moderators and the board members talking about sex with a minor. Further more this is neither here nor there. This is not your site to try and flame someone. I have proof, it was discussed peerveo extensively, as posted in those links. Also posting of websites with no content is spamming. It clearing states no spamming.
