[edit] Commentary

Thanks for your reminder. I'm seeing a growing difference between honest Wikipedia editors and the small groups of political activists who are hijacking topics to the detriment of Wikipedia's reputation. It's scandalous that Wikipedia is being victimized by these types to the extent that WP is now being publicly disparaged in national news media. Bushcutter (talk) 01:29, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes that is a serious problem; but things are not always what they appear to be. One should always be critical when reading something, whether it's from Wikipedia or in a newspaper. If you turn it around, and look at it from another perspective, a lot of editors seems to take everything Solomon have said in his column for granted. I have looked through most of the references and the page history and it's clear to me that Solomon didn't understand Wikipedia policies and he got a lot of his facts wrong. Couldn't it be that Solomon is the one with a political agenda, trying to hijack a topic here on Wikipedia, and not the other way around?
— Apis (talk) 14:57, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
No, I don't believe that is so. Solomon is an established analyst with a considerable reputation who writes under his personal name. He can be contacted by telephone and email. The hijackers in Wikipedia are simply anonymous types with no academic or public reputation, and with nothing to lose. When they hijack a topic, they bring all of Wikipedia into disrepute. Bushcutter (talk) 01:11, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
What you say about wikipedians simply isn't true, many of the established editors here use their real names and many are also experts in various fields (some I'm sure are academics, have Ph.D's etc). Other wikipedians choose to remain anonymous for various reasons (like you and me). I do it mostly because I don't think it matters who I am, what is most important is what I say and do. There is no way for anyone to verify I am who I claim to be anyway. Many editors have email activated as well, so you could email them if you really want to. :)
And, actually, Solomon is an author and a columnist, he doesn't have any academic reputation to lose, nor is he an established analyst (at least according to the page about him on NP's website: [1]).

I'm not sure what impresses you, but it certainly looks to me like he has an impressive CV - much more so than the anonymous types posting here! BTW, I'm not claiming a reputation; I'm just ashamed lately to say that Wikipedia is a credible source. Bushcutter (talk) 22:12, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Didn't say it wasn't impressive, but there are wikipedia editors that put their reptutation on the line as well.

[edit] Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations

Hello there. I see you recently decided to have a rename (and usurp) of the Apis (talk · contribs) account. However, that account has made GFDL (GNU Free Documentation License) contributions and consequently, that particular username may be unattainable. Would you be willing to choose another username? Regards, Rudget (Help?) 17:05, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Alright, I'm not familiar with US copyright law. I really would prefer Apis, but I'm always open to alternatives (or at least I try to be :)). Are you saying usurping Apis is not possible and I should try to think of another username if I want to change? Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to respond to my request.
— Apis (talk) 21:13, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, unfortunately, I don't think at this moment in time that Apis is possible. I do like your current username though, where did you think of it? :) Rudget (Help?) 10:59, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I usually use only apis, which originally was the name of a toy monkey I had when I was a kid (apis as in ape). I've been on the internet since I was 14 or something so it has stuck with me since then. Although it also has other meanings like Latin for honey bee, etc. However, apis was already taken of course, so I had to come up with something else. Being tired of always trying to come up with new names (and not wanting to use my real one, which contains non english characters anyway) I appended o-tang, which simply is short for orangutang (swedish spelling, thus the g).
I'm glad you like it. :)

[edit] Obama images

I included the image changes in my reversion because I didn't think they were appropriate. There is a case for moving one of the images, and I have just done so, but the others changes didn't look right. I guess it depends a little on browser/OS/resolution. -- Scjessey (talk) 16:46, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

The changes I made was because it looks really bad when the person on a picture is standing with his back towards the reader/text or looking away from the reader/text. My changes was in line with what wp:mos says about images: Wikipedia:Mos#Images. I noticed now that they also recommend against left aligning a image immediately under a 2nd (===) level heading (as is done now)? I still feel the other images also should be adjusted so that Obama isn't turned/looking away from the text. Regards.
