[edit] Planning
Peru officially joined the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in the 1998 Malaysia summit after President Alberto Fujimori convinced the leaders that Peru was a progressing economy. In 2003, under the Presidency of Alejandro Toledo, Peru was designated as the host nation of the 2008 summit. Since president Alan García took office in 2006, he has held meetings with the Mayor of Lima Luis Castañeda Lossio, in order to prepare the city for the meetings starting on February 2008.
The special delegate organizing the Summit includes Vice President Luis Giampietri, Minister of Foreign Commerce and Tourism Mercedes Aráoz, Minister of Economy and Finance Luis Carranza, and Minister of Foreign Relations José García Belaúnde. According to plans, the attending heads of state will gather at the Ministry of Defense headquarters, known as the "Pentagonito" ("Little Pentagon").
[edit] Expansion
Since 2004, Colombia and Ecuador have been expecting to join APEC when Peru hosts the meeting, but in APEC Australia 2007, the leaders agreed not to allow any more members until 2010[1].
