Antique was a Greek duo originating from Sweden which combined Greek popular music and lyrics with a Nordic dance/pop beat. Antique's duo included Elena Paparizou and Nikos Panagiotidis. Both were born and raised in Sweden by Greek parents. They were the first group ever to be nominated for a Swedish Grammy in the Modern Dance category (with a Greek song).

Contrary to popular rumors, Elena and Nikos were never related, nor been romantically involved. They have called their relationship one "as very good friends." Both grew up in Gothenburg.

[edit] Career

Antique's first single, Opa-Opa, a cover of a Notis Sfakianakis song, made it to the Top 5 of the Swedish Sales list and the Top 10 of all of Scandinavia and it sold over 60,000 copies which gave them gold and platinum certification. They were the first group to hit No.5 in the sales charts in their native Sweden with a song sung in Greek. That song, the hit single "Opa Opa" from the album of the same name, was a bouncy dance number that flooded the Swedish summer. The follow-up "Dinata Dinata" was also a smash.

This young duo take the Greek traditional music of their roots and inject it into the 21st century with a dose of high-tempo Nordic disco. Elena has called herself fluent in Swedish, Greek and English, and she has studied French and Spanish.

Nikos' relatives are from northern Greece while Elena's are from central Greece. In 2001, Antique were selected to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen with the song "Die For You", sung in a blend of English and Greek, ending with a third place – behind only Estonia and hosts Denmark. Having moved on from Antique, Elena Paparizou was again selected to represent Greece, this time as a solo artist, in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, and won the competition.

In July 2006, a new song leaked out on to the internet called V-Power. The song is recorded in an English and Greek version by the members of Antique. The song is about a premium unleaded gasoline product by Royal Dutch Shell, known as V-Power. V-Power suggests that Royal Dutch Shell had intentions of using the band to promote the gasoline. However, it is unclear when the songs were recorded, and why they were never released. Many fans of the group believe that it was most likely recorded when the group was still together in 2003. There are currently no intentions of re-uniting the group, although they have both expressed to want to re-unite in the future. Antique has released 2 albums in Bulgaria by KA Music with success.

Antique broke up in late 2003 on good terms with both members pursuing solo careers.[1]

Antique have sold more than 930,000 copies worldwide.
