Anies Baswedan, Ph.D., (born in Indonesia, May 7, 1969) is currently the President of Paramadina University in Jakarta, Indonesia. He is also the Research Director at The Indonesian Institute Center for Public Policy Analysis in Jakarta and Senior Researcher at The Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI).

Prior to his current positions, he worked as Research Manager at IPC in Bannockburn, Illinois, USA (2004-2005). Beginning in April 2006, he served as National Advisor on Decentralization and Regional Autonomy at the Partnership for Governance Reform and later became Governance Assessment Coordinator.

Baswedan holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from Northern Illinois University, a masters degree in Public Policy from University of Maryland School of Public Policy, College Park, and a degree in Business Management from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He has received several distinguished awards and scholarships, including the 2004 Gerald Maryanov Fellow from Northern Illinois University, Indonesian Cultural Foundation Scholarship in New York, William P. Cole III Fellowship from the University of Maryland and the Fulbright Scholarship. He was also awarded the JAL Scholarship to attend Summer Session of Asian Studies at Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan when he was a student at Gadjah Mada University.

Baswedan’s publications include “Political Islam in Indonesia: Present and Future Trajectory,” Asian Survey, a Bimonthly Review of Contemporary Asian Affairs published by University of California, Berkeley, and numerous op-ed articles in leading newspapers and magazines in Indonesia.

He was actively involved in the student movements in Indonesia during Suharto's authoritarian regime. He is known as one of a few student leaders from the early 90's movements who won Fulbright scholarship and went abroad for graduate education. He is now a prominent political analyst in Indonesia and often referred to as one of Indonesia's youngest university presidents.

The US magazine Foreign Policy named him as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world in May 2008.[1]
