[edit] Catholicism

The correct name of Portal:Catholicism is Catholicism. --WikiCats (talk) 16:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

If there is no objection, I will change the link to Portal:Catholicism without the controversial label. --WikiCats (talk) 05:25, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Why are you bringing this here? The truce on this subject is now long established and everyone has been getting along just fine for months. I belong to both the Anglican and the Roman Catholic wikiproject and when I designed this portal, I included the Roman Catholic Portal link as a courtsey. I could just drop the link from the box if you want to make an edit war over it.

The fact is, when Rome and Canterbury appear together in official Vatican documents, the usage is Roman Catholic Church. Now, let's get back to editing articles and not waste anymore time on this. -- Secisek (talk) 12:06, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

The term "Roman Catholic Church" originates as an insult created by Anglicans who wished to refer to themselves as Catholic. They coined the term "Roman Catholic" to distinguish those other Catholics so that they could refer to themselves as Catholics. They wished to deprive actual Catholics the right to use the term.

The correct name of the portal is Catholicism not Roman Catholicism. --WikiCats (talk) 14:32, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Cut the insults and look through some of the archives at talk:Roman Catholic Church about the naming of that article. It's not as clear-cut as you are trying to make out. Refering purely to Catholicism without qualification from a page about Anglicanism is problematic as many Anglicans regard themself as being in a broad sense catholic. David Underdown (talk) 15:04, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

No other religious body has such a complex of insults woven into the English language as does the Catholic Church. Since this slur or insult was created by Anglicans it is completely telling that this change of title should occur on Portal:Anglicanism. --WikiCats (talk) 15:25, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

You have been reading too much Catholic Encylopedia. Much has changed since 1913. You have failed to address why various popes and Rome in general use this "insult" as self-identification. Did you see the link above? This matter was settled here at wikipedia with Roman Catholic and non-Roman Catholic POVs alike compromising that Catholic Church should redirect to Roman Catholic Church and a DAB page was then set up for Catholic Church. The compromise went on that articles should use the term Roman Catholic in general. While Roman Catholic-themed article should use the term Roman Catholic on the first use and, IF there was NO chance of confusion, editors could there after just use the term Catholic in the article. Above all, it was settled that no one should edit any page for the sole purpose of adding or removing "Roman" from the Church name, which is why many instances of simply "Catholic Church" still exist in articles.
The amount of good feeling this promoted, and the fatigue everyone felt, has led to next to no disagreements about this since late last summer. Go read through all the pages about this debate and ask yourself if we wouldn't help the Roman Catholic presence at wikipedia more by working on RC stubs.
A wiki project Catholicism should really focus on what that article discusses, not simply the Roman Catholic Church. I have never attempted to correct this, as I would be editing a page for the sole purpose of adding or removing "Roman". It also could be seen as hostile. It could be seen as rude. It would certainly be a waste of time.
I had 12 years of Roman Catholic schooling which included religion/theology classes every day. My mother still teaches RCIA - her class is being confirmed on Saturday! The term Roman Catholic refers to the Western (Latin) church and the 22 Eastern churches that are in union with Rome. The term is used by the Vatican regularly in this sense. These are not days of Cranmer and Pole, it is not the 16th century. Let's not argue as if it were. Join me in editing St Thomas the Apostle. I would like to target him for GA. Best wishes, -- Secisek (talk) 18:03, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

This is very interesting since I was the person that conceived that compromise: Talk:Roman_Catholic_Church/Archive4#Compromise and created Catholic Church (disambiguation).

I never went on to propose any binding use of Roman Catholic. The compromise was a interim compromise not a consensus on the title of the Catholic Church article. --WikiCats (talk) 06:08, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

So you want to restart this arguement? Are you going to go to Wikiproject pages and demand the word "Roman" be dropped from their links? Are you going to demand that I remove my user box that states that I belong to Wikiproject Roman Catholicism? The "interim compromise" has kept the (relative) peace. I implore you not to take us down this path, let's work on articles and not disturb this. Have a holy Good Friday - it is 3pm in my corner of the world. -- Secisek (talk) 19:59, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Happy Easter.

Well, the page is WikiProject Catholicism, so maybe you should change the user box. --WikiCats (talk) 15:26, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Maybe we should change the project name. I ask you again, let's drop this and not upset the status quo. The compromise has not made everybody happy, but it has been working. -- Secisek (talk) 18:26, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Change the project name - good luck with that! --WikiCats (talk) 15:12, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

That's my point! On to other things. Happy Easter. -- Secisek (talk) 15:18, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

I have created the flag of Anglican Communion. See if it is useful in somewhere of Anglican Project. (P.S. I am an anglican from Hong Kong) --Ngckmax (talk) 23:10, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
