[edit] Early Football Career

As a child, Angus grew up supporting the Adelaide Crows and, as a year 7 student at Pembroke School, he notified all AFL clubs of who he was, provided a record of his junior football statistics, his school report and a letter stating his desire to someday become a professional AFL player.[citation needed]

Angus was picked by the Bombers with selection 14 in the 2004 AFL draft. He made his debut in Round 1 of the 2005 season against Melbourne, which saw him become the 200th player to have played under coach Kevin Sheedy[1]. Angus maintained his position in the senior side until Round 4. He was dropped for the blockbuster ANZAC Day clash, in Round 5, against Collingwood and not seen at senior level again until Round 12. In Round 13 against St Kilda, Angus kicked 2 goals and, alongside other young Bombers stars, played a key role in a 15 point win. Angus then went on to play every game for the remainder of the season. Despite being a player of small stature and a newcomer to senior football, Angus is best known for his quick thinking, fierce determination, ample courage and keen attitude towards training.

With the club underperforming in transitional year, he performed gallantly as a handy small forward, signalling that he should eventually become a focal point within Essendon's midfield. His early endeavours have begun to garner him notoriety in greater AFL circles. Essendon fans have applauded his ability to only have eyes for the ball in every contest and his maturity that also opines that he will more than likely become a part of the club's leadership group at a young age.

Following up on his excellent first year in senior football, Angus reaffirmed why he was chosen as Essendon's number 1 draft pick in 2004. In 2006, his second season, Angus played 21 games, missing only 1 game (round 15) due to a minor calf strain.

In 2007, Angus continued to impress by playing 20 out of 22 games. After an overall abysmal performance by the entire team, which saw the Bombers go down to Port Adelaide by 31 points following 4 excellent wins, Angus was omitted (along with Chris Heffernan) and missed rounds 13 and 14[2]. He was, however, named as an emergency for both matches and quickly returned to the team in Round 15 due to pressures caused by injuries to James Hird and Alwyn Davey and the suspensions of Dustin Fletcher and Mark McVeigh[3].

[edit] Jumper Number

Since his debut, Angus has worn the No.6 jumper, a number previously worn by well-known Essendon players such as Sean Wellman (1996-2004), Anthony Daniher (1987-1994) and Neale Daniher (1979-1981 & 1985).

[edit] Career Highlights & Awards

Angus was rewarded with Most Courageous Player at the 2006 Crichton Medal (Essendon Best and Fairest).

[edit] Outside Football

Having settled in Melbourne, Angus is currently studying a degree in Journalism at La Trobe University.
