[edit] Name and DYK

I think the name Andrew's Descent is fine, that I would prever to translit. We have European Square in Kiev article, rather than Yevropeyska Square, whIch is a redirect. I see no good reason I could formulate for that, but it is just better to my taste. If others disagree, let's discuss and vote at some point. Most importantly, though, is developing the article fast while the clock is ticking for the WP:DYK submission that would look smth like:

There is plenty of info on the web and in the refs. Let's get to work. --Irpen 20:01, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

I would prefer Andreevskiy/Andriyvskyi Descent. That is how streets are usually translated: the name (eg Krasnya, Bessarabskaya etc) and then the complementary object (street, square, descent..)--Kuban kazak 21:37, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
Works fine for me. Currently, the title reminds me about a painting about Apostle Andrew's descent from the cross he was crucified on. Moving Yevropeyska Square to its current name was a mistake, too. Eponymous squares exist in many cities. --Ghirla | talk 23:34, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

It's fine with me. --DDima 02:03, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Images and more links

Several old photographies XIX c. (PD-old) [1] [2] --Yakudza 23:21, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

The author of http://dem.globaltechnology.ru/Kiev_andrew.htm in responce to my request gave the permission to use her pics at en-wiki under GFDL with the customary aknowledgement, similar to the author of sk.vlasenko.net, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pochaev.jpg for an example of the aknowledgement. The author requests a note so that she is informed of what articles feature her images. Everyone's welcome to download those images, but please do not forget to mention the author at the image page and leave a note at article's talk so that I email to the author, or email her directly through her site.

I Yandexed those and more can be easily found. These are a grab bag of rather random links, but even with them much can be done. Sorry that I haven't done it myself. Also, if you enter the Ukrainian name in the Yandex search string, you will find many links too, as my experience tells me with other Kiev places.

The author of http://dem.globaltechnology.ru/Kiev_andrew.htm site responded to my email and she agrees to using her images under GFDL license. The Bulgakov house plaque image I added is from this site. Please elaborate on Pronya Prokopovna and Filip Petrovich Golohvastov and add their image or I will do it later. The most urgent is to add info on Ricrahd's Castle (see top of this talk) so that we can DYK it. Only one day left to DYK. --Irpen 06:13, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] GA Nom

I think that we should nominate this article for GA. Or should we add more info from other sites first? It would be nice to have a good article about smthing Ukraine-related... Any objections? —dima /sb.tk/ 02:59, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Good idea! You wrote many apolitical articles that could be GAed with little difficulty. We have several more written earlier and the Olimpiysky Sport Complex I destubbed is detailed enough.
Also, Khreschatyk, Bridges of Kiev? Any of the Metro articles? We have a listing for that at Portal:Ukraine/Things you can do. Let's continue on its talk. --Irpen 03:45, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Good Article nomination has failed

The Good article nomination for Andriyivskyy Descent has failed, for the following reason:

I'm failing this article for GA for now. Before anyone puts a contract out on me, let me say I thought the article was very nice and very close to my standards for GA. I have visited Kiev a couple of times and this brought back fun memories. Anyway... here are my reasons for failing (in no particular order)
  1. Mainly I am a bit concerned about the english and I thik it could use another round of edits to reach the "compelling prose" standard. While reading I actually made a few edits along those lines. Two very specific concerns are the sentence "But the stunning relief of Andriyivskyy Descent softened the effect of this plagiarism." and "One of the hills was the place where pre-Christian idols once stood, known as Uzdyhal'nycia'". For the first one, is relief really the intended word here? Anyways, I just could not understand what was meant. For the second, it is ambiguous whether Uzdyhal'nycia' is the name of the hill or the name of the idols (I'm guessing the hill) and it would be good to have, if that makes any sense, a translation.
  2. I don't understand why Viktor Nekrasov's naming of the building stuck. It feels like some info is missing there.
  3. Not that I want to turn Wikipedia into Lonely Planet but, given the subject matter, I think the article could still use a few more pictures. I'm assuming that a few of the people involved in the writing live or often go to Kiev. The second and last picture are not very good and I think at least a picture of the Richard Lionheart castle should be included.
  4. Last, slightly unfair criticism: it would be preferable to have a few more sources in English. Of course, I understand that given the subject matter this is not so trivial but the russian references are pretty much useless for a vast majority of the readers.

That being said, still a very nice article which should be re-nominated after the next wave of improvements. Pascal.Tesson 02:06, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Passed Good Article nomination

I think that this article meets Good Article standards. I don't think the issue about the English has been fully addressed, but I think it has been to a satisfactory degree. I think that the lead image is absolutely stunning and the following ones add considerably. It could probably still use a few more sources. Overall, however, I think it is a good article. :] --Keitei (talk) 09:59, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
