Amsterdam in vogelvlucht. Dit is de houtsnede die Cornelis Anthonisz. in 1544 maakte naar een olieverfschilderij van eigen hand uit 1538. NB: het noorden (het IJ) bevindt zich aan de onderkant. Dit is de stad vóór de aanleg van de grachtengordel. Zij wordt begrensd door het IJ, het Singel in het westen en Kloveniersburgwal/Gelderse Kade in het oosten. Het water in het midden wordt sinds de 19e eeuw Damrak genoemd. Ergens in de 14e eeuw werd deze monding van de Amstel aan beide zijden aangeplempt. Op de oostoever werden panden gebouwd die met hun rug direct aan het water kwamen te staan. Op de westoever werd ruimte gelaten voor het laden en lossen. Deze kade werd Op het water genoemd. Op de Dam stond indertijd nog niet het huidige gebouw maar een voorloper van het stadhuis van nl:Jacob van Campen. English: A bird's eye view of Amsterdam facing south. It is bordered by the IJ, the Singel in the west, and the Kloveniersburgwal/Gelderse Kade in the east. The waterway in the middle has been known as the Damrak since the 19th century.
