[edit] Amity Island --> Amityville?
Is this bit really true or merely conjecture?
Amity Island, the setting of the 1975 movie Jaws is supposedly loosly based on Amityville, although the ocean beaches are a few minutes south along the barrier islands.
Someone who knows might be able to advise the accurancy of this. It seems unlikely since Jaws is set on a very small resort island that is reached by ferry, whereas Amityville is on Long Island - a very different sort of island. Also, where was Peter Benchley's novel Jaws set, and was that novel written prior to the murders and later haunted house stories that occurred in the real Amityville? Regarding Jaws, I would say it is half-accurate, as we all know Hollywood has more than a tendency to overstate / grossly over-exaggerate well, ... everything.
The village of Amityville is situated along the Great South Bay. Right across the bay are a series of uninhabited barrier islands (more like glorified sandbars) consisting of either dunes, trees, brushland, etc... or just marshes in the middle of the rather shallow bay. Beyond that is Fire Island; the main barrier island, not more than a mile wide by any good estimate. And that is most likely the place referred to as "Amity Island". Fire Island (more specifically, Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines) is sparsely inhabited year-round, but tends to be quite the resort during the summer months by the upper echelons of Long Island's "elite" (among other places). (The price to rent a beach house for the summer can exceed $35,000)
I would say that would probably be the correct setting, as it was most likely renamed because most people who are not familiar with Long Island, would probably be confused. That or Hollywood movie execs were just misinformed. - SoniK Traveler - April 20, 2006 2:47PM EST
The novel sets it in Amity, a fictitious town on the south shore of Long Island, between Bridgehampton and East Hampton. This lies about 100 miles east of Amityville. Benchley probably wanted to create a town whose sounded vaguely familiar to those who know the northeast (the book Jaws predates the book The Amityville Horror by three years) but without actually placing it somewhere real. [edit] Asian long-horned beetle
As far as an official citation it may be hard to come across... until 2004, I was a lifelong resident on Wilson Ave (Amityville, Amity Harbor to be more specific. I remember when they found it and I remember News 12 Long Island being there and running a story on the discovery of this beetle in the United States

[edit] Amityville Horror House
The link about finding the Amityville Horror house has been removed, as this is a private residence in the village of Amityville, and the family living there gets more than their share of unwelcomed guests and gawkers. (After the remake of the movie in 2005, for a few weeks the police were actually ticketing people who would stop too long to stare at the house!) No need to invade their privacy, leave them alone.
