Alwal

Alwal is a major residential suburb of Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad city. It has a population of 106,424 (2001 census) and forms part of the Greater Hyderabad agglomeration.
A part of the British cantonment, Alwal got its name from the residents of Alwar a city in Rajasthan who settled here in late 1800s.
Alwal is home to a historic Venkateshwara Temple, which is located near Alwal Municipal office. There are a number of other temples in the vicinity, at the nearby cantonment (Lalbazar) including one built in the style of the Lotus Temple in Delhi.
The People of Alwal celebrate all festivals with lot of grandeur and the community is rich with resources and facilities like connectivity of roads, rail, market places etc.
This area is booming in real estate housing projects as residents of central Hyderabad move to Alwal to escape traffic congestion and pollution. The nearby cantonment (military) area offers extensive lung space which offers a breath of fresh air for the morning walkers.

Alwal is hub for shopping for nearby suburbs and villages, the shopping options and wide ranging. There is a e-seva centre, a service provided for paying bills and other government services.
A vegetables market, Rythu bazaar is located here.
There are four cinema halls. It is close to recreation spots like The Celebrity Club, Alankrita, The Orange Bowl, Dhola-Ri-Dhani and Runway-9.

Alwal is 8 km away from Secunderabad Railway station and just 12 km from away from the Old Hyderabad Airport in Begumpet Begumpet Airport and about 40 km from New International Airport in Shamshabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
APSRTC runs buses here connecting Alwal to all parts of the city.
MMTS has a train station called as Alwal Railway Station here.

Alwal is also home to some of the famous schools in Secunderabad like theSt.Ann's High School, Bolarum which was set up in 1887 by a group of nuns from Italy. The other schools in the area are Valerian Grammar School (Bollarum), Loyola Academy, K.V.Bollarum and not to forget the Raja Praja High School.
XLRI, a famous management college, is starting its second campus there on a 30-acre plot located on the 135-acre Society of Jesuits-run Loyola College premises at Alwal.

Shyam Benegal, a prolific Indian director and screenwriter use to live here. It was here that formed the Hyderabad Film Society.
Gaddar (born as and also known as Gummadi Vittal Rao) (born 1949) is a pseudonym of a revolutionary Telugu balladeer and vocal Naxalite activist also lives here.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Alwal had a population of 106,424. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Alwal has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 58% of the males and 42% of females literate. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
