Alternative Green

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alternative Green is a UK magazine set up by former Green Anarchist contributor and editor Richard Hunt.

Hunt founded the magazine after leaving the editorial collective of Green Anarchist. According to the remaining editors of Green Anarchist, this happened following a conflict over what what was perceived to be his nationalistic tendencies. This came to a head when Green Anarchist published an article of Hunt's that appeared to give patriotic support to Britain's role during the 1991 Gulf War. Hunt himself has stated that the conflict arose when other editors wanted to move Green Anarchist's political direction further left, while Hunt wished to remain outside of the left-right spectrum.[1]

Alternative Green has continued to promote Hunt's own vision of green anarchism, and due to his policy of publishing articles from across the political spectrum, Alternative Green has been strongly attacked by many anarchists and socialists. Green Anarchist has publicly accused Hunt and Alternative Green of being fascist, and writer Stewart Home has published many articles mocking both Green Anarchist and Alternative Green, claiming that they promote a kind of ecofascism.[2] Issue 33's editorial committee was listed as Jonothon Boulter, Troy Southgate, Wayne John Sturgeon and Adrian White. All but White have been closely involved with the national-anarchist movement, in groups such as the National Revolutionary Faction, the Cercle de la rose noire, and the New Right. Unconfirmed reports state that White is now sole editor and the other three are no longer members of the editorial board. Nevertheless, Sturgeon has continued to contribute to the magazine [3], and Southgate has continued to publicise it.[4]

Alternative Green does not have a website and is not listed on the catalogue of the British Library or the Copac union catalogue of UK research libraries.
