Alex Fishbein

Born on May 8, 1968, Alexander Fishbein is an International Grandmaster of chess. Fishbein learned chess from his father, Gregory, at the age of four. In 1985, he was the winner of the first Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions. Fishbein was very active on the national and international chess circuit in the early 1990s, winning tournaments in Chicago, as well as Stavanger, Norway, and Herning, Denmark, among others. He became a grandmaster in 1992.
Since 1993, Fishbein has worked in the securities industry. He traded collateralized mortgage obligations at Morgan Stanley from 2005 to 2007 and is now a Portfolio Manager at Citigroup Alternative Investments.
Fishbein and his wife, Lana, have three children: Ellen, Samuel, and Mitch. Fishbein still finds time away from his work and family to compete in chess tournaments, including four times this decade in the U.S. Chess Championship (best result: 8th place in 2006).
