Air Illinois
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Air Illinois was a commuter airline founded in 1970 in Chicago, Illinois.[1] It primarily operated small twin turboprop aircraft such as the Beech 99. By 1978, the company acquired a small number of 36-seat Hawker-Siddeley HS.748 turboprops, which were mostly used to connect Springfield with Chicago's Meigs field. This was by far the largest aircraft to use the lakefront airport on a regular basis.
In 1982, Air Illinois significantly expanded by acquiring Memphis-based Scheduled Skyways and Mobile-based South Central Air Transport. However, the economics of the system proved too challenging, and the entire company left the business by 1984.
