Aegis is a text-based MMORPG set in a fantasy medieval/magical world where players assume the role of the leader of a province and strive to better their province through battle, trade and politics. Aegis is a MMORPG with a large, active community of players from around the world. The game is browser-based and free to play, with the added option of donating.

Aegis players assume the role of a leader of a city state. Players may embark on various objectives such as constructing a city[1], dealing with the internal issues, such as utilizing limited land and choosing your Path (such as magic, religion, science, all with different advantages), to making enough food to feed your peasants, or deciding to make a surplus to sell in the auctions; while dealing with the external issues, such as other provinces who may want to wage war against fellow players.[2]

Contents

[edit] Features

  • Aegis provides three different servers (Adarkis, Elderis, and Merlidia) to play on. Each server is based on a server specific continent.
  • AEGIS has a combined Forum, accessible from all three servers, which allows players around the globe to interact freely.
  • A text-based interface is provided for players to navigate through Aegis.
  • Aegis features over 50 troop types, each with different strengths, weaknesses and abilities, and 70 different types of buildings .[2]

[edit] Aspects of the Game

Aegis has aspects of both war and peace; both are considered dependent of each other. As a result, it can be considered a tactical game. The aspects of war within the game have many different functions, ranging from destroying a player's province, to plundering resources.[3]

Individuals are known to take the peaceful route; they are known to continue to build their province and still conduct diplomatic interaction within the community via the various political threads in the game forums.

[edit] Forum

The forums are an integral part of the community and Aegis. They are open to all players, on all three servers. The topics range from help on generic questions to strategy based questions to leisurely discussions on topics outside the game. The interaction of players is generally dependant on the Aegis forums providing a medium within the game itself.

[edit] Role-Playing

The role-playing aspect of aegis is considered integral to the online community. Role-Playing entails creating a specific "character" (or role) that the player, as leader of his or her province, will assume and carry out actions and conversations in the forum or chat accordingly. The player will then often base their decision-making and interacting with other characters on the personality and traits of their character.[4]

[edit] Medals

Medals are given as a recognition of a players contribution to the game. These are awarded by the Eldars (moderators of the game forums and community on behalf of Demosios gaming), based on a player's level of participation and good conduct within the game. Three further medals are awarded to players who show exceptional ability in fighting, diplomacy, or Role-playing (see above).

[edit] Gameplay

The Player 'Province' is based around a medieval city-state, and has similar problems: food production, fires, theft/ fraud, resource production, trading, defence of the city and management of an army.

A kingdom is a group of provinces united under one ruler, a King or Queen. When a province reaches ample net worth, it is given the option of joining a kingdom, or at a higher net worth, eventually establishing one of its own. The game has bonuses which may be purchased to improve the Kingdoms, each with their own individual bonuses . These special bonuses, known as 'ACTS', are provided to help with many aspects of kingdom life in Aegis. Once bought, they are available to the whole kingdom. [5]

The provinces net worth in the game is the collective worth of all its belongings, from buildings and land to the amount of resources that you have stored up. Those players who have the highest net worth on the server (continent), have the possibility to become emperor, as long as there is no current one, and provided if a certain building called "emperor's palace" has been acquired. One of the main goals of Aegis is to become emperor of a "continent" (server).[6]

There are three separate customisations that provinces can progress towards: Magic, Religion, and Science. Each customisation, called a "path", awards your province with certain benefits in varying aspects of the game, the benefits being loosely based on the chosen path. They range from special troop types to increases in architecture, building power, and farming efficiency. A province diverges on its specific path after planning its specific building: Grand Tower of Magic, Temple of the Gods, and University of Science respectively.[7]

Sometimes a group of kingdoms join together, to protect each other and wage war as a single entity. These entities are called "Empires". Empires usually form to protect themselves from attackers and to bring people with the same objectives in the game together. Empires are either peaceful or war-like; such a designation is generally chosen by the individuals who run the empire. Empires are not, however, given official status in the game, in that they are not coded into the game. They are merely based on ad-hoc needs.
