Aedas (pronounced eye–das from the Latin “Aedificare[1]” – to build) is a global architectural firm recognised for their creativity in mixed-use developments, transportation, education and healthcare building design.

Aedas has offices around the world including: London, Hong Kong, New York, Moscow, Almaty, Kiev, Beijing, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Macau, Dehli, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore, Warsaw, Washington D.C., Los Angeles (LA).

The practice employs a multi-disciplinary network of qualified staff and works in the field of architecture, access consultancy, building consultancy, building surveying, conservation, geomatics, health and safety management, imaging, interiors, landscape and environment, masterplanning and urban design, research and development and workplace consulting. Regularly featured in the AJ100[2] and Building Design magazine[3] and Building magazine’s[4] top 100 league tables, the practice has an impressive collection of accolades a few of which are listed further on in this article.

In the UK, Aedas currently employs over 700 people based in Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Huddersfield, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Manchester Airport and Shrewsbury. Aedas plays a role in the design of some of the most significant developments in the UK. Recent projects include Bauhaus in Manchester, Colmore Plazain Birmingham, the iconic West Tower in Liverpool, Bridgewater Place in Leeds and the Haymarket Interchange in Edinburgh. The practice is noted for it's educational design demonstrated by establishments such as Holland Park School in West London, Sheffield Springs in Sheffield and Stockley Academy in West London. The UK team also work on international projects including the Middle East and the CIS region. Recent designs include the Abu Dhabi Investment Council Headquarters and various luxury hotel developments in Kazakhstan.

Aedas employs over 1,200 staff in the Asia region. Hong Kong is the largest centre in the Aedas Group and leads the practice’s Asia offices. Aedas Asia is reputed for its masterplanning and mixed-use designs, particularly in the People’s Republic of China. Other areas of sector-specific expertise in Asia include integrated retail centres, luxury hotel, resort, cultural and leisure projects including the Venetian Cotai Strip in Macau, which comprises over 50 million square feet of development. Aedas has a track record in transport and infrastructure design with over 35 rail stations and six depots throughout Asia, 15 buildings at the Hong Kong International Airport and six seaport terminals for the world’s busiest container port in Hong Kong.

Aedas’ Central and Eastern Europe operations include offices in Russia and the CIS, based around four key locations – Moscow, Warsaw, Katowice and Kiev. Aedas collaborates with partners throughout the region – most notably through its joint venture relationship with the Moscow based company CITP. Close links to the Kazakhstan operation based around offices in Almaty and Astana allow the servicing of requirements in the wider geographical region stretching from the Baltic states to the Balkans and including all of Russia and the CIS.

In the Middle East[5], Aedas has emerged as one of the leading international architects and has undertaken the design of over 20,000,000 square feet (1,900,000 m²) of building development. Since the opening of the Middle East offices, Aedas’ designs have shaped emerging skylines in the United Arab Emirates. The practice’s various high-rise residential, commercial and mixed-use developments include the 618-metre tall Pentominium building at Dubai Marina and the 310-metre and 420-metre Ocean Heights I and II developments. Aedas’ expertise in infrastructure design knowledge has transferred to the Middle East with the design of a metro network that consists of 47 stations and two depots in Dubai.

In 2006, Aedas announced its partnership with the prestigious New York firm Davis Brody Bond, Architects and Planners. Now known as Davis Brody Bond Aedas the practice employs over 100 staff and is amongst the USA’s leading architectural design firms. Davis Brody Bond Aedas also has offices in Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Brazil. Known for innovative solutions to complex design challenges, Davis Brody Bond Aedas’ work includes high profile academic and cultural buildings, corporate and industrial facilities, and housing. Davis Brody Bond Aedas is currently serving as the design architect for the National September 11th Museum and as associate architect for the National September 11th Memorial at the World Trade Center.

On Friday 11th April 2008 at the 4th Liverpool Daily Post Regional Property Awards[7] in association with RBS, Beetham West Tower won Aedas the best Mixed Use Development prize. This prize was awarded for best use of land which would normally have stood barren, creation of an iconic building and best use of limited space.

[edit] Origins

Aedas was established in 2002 with the partnership of LPT Architects in Hong Kong and Abbey Holford Rowe in the UK to become Aedas LPT and Aedas AHR respectively. Following a merger with TCN Architects of Birmingham in 2003, the name Aedas was adopted for all areas of the practice with the LPT and AHR being dropped from the Hong Kong and UK practice names later in 2003. The most recent partner is Davis Brody Bond Aedas, an award-winning American architectural firm with headquarters in New York.
