[edit] Company History

Though founded as an independent company in 1990, AECOM’s history can be traced back to the early 1900s and the inception of the Ashland Oil & Refining Company in Lexington, Kentucky. Through a series of acquisitions and technological developments, Ashland grew to include chemical, petrochemical, highway construction and construction materials firms within its realm, laying the groundwork for the creation of Ashland Technology in 1985. One of Ashland’s acquisitions included Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenall (DMJM), a transportation-related engineering firm, in 1984. Richard Newman was president of DMJM at the time of the acquisition was later named president of Ashland Technology. When Ashland chose to return to its core petroleum refining business in the late 1980s, Newman recommended an employee buyback proposal, resulting in the spin-off of Ashland Technology and the 1990 creation of AECOM, an acronym for Architecture, Engineering, Consulting, Operations & Maintenance. Through the 1990s and into the 21st century, AECOM has continued to expand its global reach and grow its assets through strategic mergers and acquisitions, such as: Consoer Townsend Envirodyne Engineers Frederic R. Harris Inc. (transportation) Holmes & Narver, Inc. (transportation) Turner Collie & Braden, Inc. (engineering) Day & Zimmerman Infrastructure, Inc. (aviation project and construction management) W. F. Castella (engineering and land surveying) Spillis Candela & Partners (architecture and engineering) Metcalf & Eddy, Inc. (environmental consulting) Guy Maunsell International Limited (infrastructure design) KPMG Consulting LLC (transportation planning practice) Warren Group (water engineering) Oscar Faber plc (design and transportation planning) Alliance (consulting) PADCO, Inc. (consulting) The Austin Co. (design and construction) ENSR International (environmental consulting, engineering and remediation)

In the last nine years, AECOM has completed at least 30 acquisitions – one of its most recent was Boyle Engineering, a California-based firm specializing in water management (drinking water, wastewater treatment and resource management).

After scuttling a first attempt in 2002, AECOM went public in May 2007 with a very successful IPO on the NYSE, netting $470 million.

Presently, the company is ranked professionally as follows:

  • Fortune 1,000 – Currently ranked #535

[edit] Leadership History

AECOM’s first president and CEO was Richard Newman, who came to Ashland through its acquisition of DMJM. Newman served as president of Ashland Technology and was instrumental in the creation of AECOM through an employee buyback when Ashland chose to return to its core petroleum business.

Newman turned over AECOM’s management to its current president and CEO, John Dionisio, in October 2005 and remains the company chairman.

John Dionisio also came to AECOM through DMJM and served as its chief operating officer prior to becoming president and CEO. A graduate of the City College of New York and the Polytechnic Institute of New York, Dionisio has worked in the industry for more than 30 years, has extensive engineering and project consulting experience and is active with a number of professional engineering societies, including his service as co-chair of the American Public Transportation Association Partnership for Tomorrow Program Funding Cabinet.

In 2007, AECOM added Norman Mineta, the former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation under President George W. Bush and Secretary of U.S. Department of Commerce under President Bill Clinton, to its board of directors.

[edit] Business Services

AECOM is a leading global provider of professional technical and management support services to both public and private sector clients with projects on all seven continents. Examples include:

[edit] Transportation Projects

AECOM is currently involved in several major transportation projects, including the Los Angeles Rail Lines, where work is underway to extend the Gold Line (Eastside Extension) and Mid-City/Expo Line. The Eastside Extension expects to serve 27,000 daily riders by 2020.

[edit] Environmental Services

AECOM offers consultation services to assist cities in city planning, specific to ecological preservation. For example, the company worked closely with the city of Shenzhen, China, in its environmental planning, resulting in recommendations for coastline preservation, parks, forests, mountains, water systems, beaches, and freshwater and marine ecosystems. AECOM is also working closely with the Canadian government to dismantle the Distant Early Warning System, a Cold War-era early missile detection system near the Arctic Circle. Years of neglect and deterioration resulted in contaminated soil and infrastructure that need to be properly removed. AECOM is providing the consultation services necessary to devise a plan to return the landscape to its original condition by 2012.

[edit] Facilities Consultation

Office building sustainability is one of AECOM’s core businesses. One example of such work is the National Australia Bank in Melbourne. AECOM’s building design recommendations included fresh air ventilation and exterior glare screens to improve natural lighting and reduce employee eye strain.

[edit] Disaster Response

Natural disasters demand require governmental assistance, and to that end, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) contracts with AECOM for consultation in assessing damage and long term recovery planning. For example, AECOM was called in to assess damage to the educational infrastructure following Hurricane Katrina. Up to 300 employees can be deployed for 8 - 12 month commitments following a major natural or man-made disaster to assist in recovery efforts.

[edit] Governmental Assistance

AECOM provides technology and infrastructure support to governmental agencies, such as the U.S. Army. For example, the company supports Fort Polk in Louisiana with financial, purchasing, human resources management and building maintenance (HVAC and mechanicals) service.
