Adventist studies

"Adventist Studies" (as an abbreviation of "Seventh-day Adventist studies") is the academic study of Seventh-day Adventism.[1] This article describes the way Adventism has been conceived and taught.

Adventist Studies is a Christian subset of religious studies.[1] Arthur Patrick has surveyed the discipline,[1] describing it as a "maturing discipline".[2]
[edit] Ellen White studies
An important segment is "Ellen White studies" which is concerned with study of the life and writings of Ellen G. White, a co-founder of the church.[1] It is sometimes considered an academic discipline in its own right.[1]

Detailed study of Adventism by doctoral candidates has been occurring since at least Everett N. Dick's 1930 dissertation.[3] Richard Schwarz' Light Bearers to the Remnant (1979) was the first history of the Adventist church written by a trained historian (now revised by Floyd Greenleaf as Light Bearers: A History of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2000).[2]
Andrews University was the first institution to offer a PhD in Adventist studies.[4]
George Knight has supervised more doctoral students in Adventist studies than any other educator.

Avondale College Church in Australia has hosted annual presentations on Adventist studies, beginning in 2002.[5][1] Keynote speakers have been Fritz Guy in 2002, William Johnsson in 2003, Alden Thompson in 2004, and Kendra Haloviak in 2005.[5] The annual Avondale College Murdoch Lecture started in 1997.[1] Avondale College was approved to offer PhDs in 2006.[6]
