1. My best advice is to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia. Get to know the Help:Contents pages like the back of your hand. Then move on to the Wikipedia:Community portal and Wikipedia:Department directory. While reading, if you come across any links that are blatantly missing from Help, the Directory, or the Community Portal, by all means add them in! But don't forget article space! It's easy to caught up in the Wikipedia community and practically forget that Wikipedia is first and formost an encycopedia. An encyclopedia which has a long way to go before being even close to completion. Dig in and learn to your heart's content. A great place to start is Wikipedia's Help desk. You'll learn a lot because just about every kind of weird problem comes across that desk. You'll get to see how others answer the questions, and pretty soon, you'll be able to answer most of them too. I'd appreciate admin coaching. At the moment, I can think of three areas I'd like guidance on: (a) in my recent unsuccessful RfA, one of the pieces of advice that stood out to me was that I need to learn to "be as Zen as possible, and seek out the center of indifference." I think I've gotten calmer and not quite so hairtrigger, but I still have a ways to go before becoming a Zen admin. (b) I have an idea for an effort to get a particular article I'd love to get going up the chain to good/featured article status (I'd like to satisfy the WP:1FA-ers), but need advice on how to gather interested editors and coordinate efforts; (c) I'd appreciate guidance or coaching to figure out various WikiProjects — preferably articlespace but also Wikipedia-namespace — where I can lend my shoulder to the grindstone in a more concentrated subject area or manner. (a) Become one with the wiki. As time goes on, you will learn more and more about Wikipedia and its operations, so that things which seemed so important while you were embroiled in a confrontation will appear trivial when you look back upon them just 3 or 4 months later. Wikipedia is almost indestructable. You can afford to let things go, back off, chill and watch what happens. It's not going to fall apart while you are gone. And keep in mind that there are probably a dozen other ways to achieve any specific editing goal you might have here. There are many paths to enlightenment in the wiki. (b) consider placing notices in all the right places, such as on the discussion page of the relevant WikiProject, on the Community bulletin board, and of course on the talk page of the article in question. Before going through Wikipedia:Peer review, you may want to try Wikipedia:Requests for feedback first. Be sure to focus on the article's references, as that is one of the hardest chores in polishing an article to featured status. See Wikipedia:References for more information. (c) A couple projects in the Wikipedia namespace that could really use some more volunteers are Wikipedia:Contents (if you like subject matter) and Wikipedia:Tip of the day (if you want to dig into the how-to of Wikipedia). For both of those projects, the talk page is where the action is. In the main namespace, the Lists of basic topics, which provides "cheat sheets" on a variety of subjects is far from complete, and provides an opportunity to share your knowledge in a variety of subject areas. Pick a favorite subject and jump in - or see the detailed task list on the talk page. Why the rush? Focus on the health of the wiki, and everything else will take care of itself. One approach to becoming an admin is not to worry about it. Just be the best editor you can be, get involved with projects wherever your heart takes you, and eventually someone may nominate you. Being in a hurry is a fast path to frustration. To become a better Wikipedian, make Wikipedia better. Wikipedia is both an encyclopedia and a community. Anything you can do to improve either or both of those is a reflection upon you and all other Wikipedians. Not only will you enrich yourself, but you will enrich other Wikipedians in the process -- and everyone who accesses Wikipedia from all around the world is a Wikipedian. While you are waiting, a link dump needs sorting through on List of glossaries, in case you want to help out with the Wikipedia:Contents project, the goal of which is to get the main access pages of Wikipedia ready for inclusion on the sidebar, so that they are easily accessible from everywhere on Wikipedia. Either the page links themselves may be provided on the sidebar, or the Contents page. Good of you for taking this over. Thanks for the offer of work but I have enough on my plate for the medium term. If you have a look round I've done the same as yourself and with one other editor have taken over the user page warnings project, see here and here. Well anyway sorry I can't take this on as well (for now) but as I said before I'll still be here. Looking at your comment on the bottom, a bit about me, I have about 3,500 edits mainly through vandal fighting, and a couple of articles, dabble a little bit in afd's but the main area is the user page warnings. You may want to look into some of Wikipedia's other departments, but with 3,000+ edits almost split down the middle between article space and the wikipedia namespace, you're ready for the mop. The best approach is probably to ask the admin you know best (and who knows you best) to nominate you. That admin will be able to write the best nom. There are some things that seem to go over my head in this internet community.......IMHO, it's not as much of being the ideal admin as being the ideal wikipedian. To get a feel for what your fellow Wikipedians value in an administrator, read through the RfA archives. Also take note of the objections posted in your RfA, roll up your shirtsleeves and put in some time in the article namespace. Just press "random article" until something interesting pops up, and start editing away. Alternatively, you can start browsing at Wikipedia:Contents and keep clicking on links until you spot something interesting or which needs help. Get your main namespace edits up to about 3,000, to 5,000 and then go for RfA again.  The Transhumanist   12:28, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Don't forget the guidelines, those are important too. One way to get familiar with policies is to read the talk pages of those who cite them all the time: namely, administrators. Admins need experience all around. I noticed you haven't done much with Portals or Categories yet. You might want to put some edits in there. You also seem to like aviation and space flight. You could check each of the pages on the Template:Contents pages (header bar) to see if those two subjects are adequately covered. Once you are done with those, any and all Help:Contents pages need monitoring/proofreading/updating/improving. I am not quite sure what you mean by "Wikipedia's the help" pages. I am pretty sure you do not mean the Help Desk, however, I am familiar with those. It is a little surprising to get this call just now as I am handing in my thesis today, something which prevented me having any serious thoughts about immediate adminship for the last two months. Unless I'm reading this thing wrong, you've got 57 edits on articles. The best thing you can do for Wikipedia is read it. That's right, read the encyclopedia. I don't think so. This page lists the pre-requisites for actual coaching as being 1,000 edits in two namespaces, but there's nothing against applying earlier. You've got quite a bit of main namespace experience. You would be a major asset to the Wikipedia:Help desk and Wikipedia:New contributors' help page as a volunteer to pass on your editing experience to others. Volunteering there will give you an opportunity to become more familiar with Wikipedia's reference pages (help pages, directories, etc.), as you will need to look up the answers to any questions you do not know. I'm coming up on 16,000 edits here pretty soon, and I haven't even tried for my RfA yet (though I'm now gearing up for it). There's just so much to do, and so many projects, that fixating on admin status is unnecessary. There are hundreds of projects to work on, and millions of pages. Just keep accumulating experience, and adminship will eventually be a breeze.

Concerning your RfA, the opposition seemed to be focused on a perception of negativity. You can disagree with others (in AfDs, RfAs, etc.), but you need to show more compassion toward your fellow Wikipedians. Without changing your vote, go beyond the vote to help in some way, with advice, offer to answer questions, etc. The spirit of adminship is helping others, while protecting Wikipedia. Great, thanks! Yes, I know about the userpage editing: my main problem is that I start new articles in my userspace and edit large articles (Ahmose I, as a good example) that take a while in my sandbox. I also work on stuff for other users on my subpages, and contribute to things on other users' subpages.
Two days ago (before I got this message) I started doing some constructive encyclopedia-editing, copyediting articles extensively. I think that will be my focus here, as I much prefer fixing others' work than adding original content of my own (not that I don't do that too).

Learn by example. Pick your favorite admin or two, and then carefully study their contribution histories. Dip in and read how they deal with users. As for editing, study the edit histories of featured articles and their talk pages. Then you'll know how quality articles are edited. Use the diff button to read the changes, and don't be shy - go in and display each version and look them over carefully. User:Pegship is one of the most knowledgeable editors I've ever run across. Yep, edit summaries are important. You are already on the right track. Read the policies, but don't forget the guidelines. Familiarize yourself with 's departments, and above all, master Wikipedia's help pages. I really didn't do check minor edit everytime I made a minor edit, and maybe 10% of the time left an edit summary. I suggest going into your preferences, and checking "check all edits as minor" and the option that tells you to leave an edit summary if you didn't. Wow, there's a tips page? The best way to learn the tips and tricks is the same way as learning them in any good expensive piece of software—use it a lot, and they'll be apparent. Based on the first page of your contributions, it looks like most of what you do is VFing. I've been on Wikipedia quite awhile now (a year or two, tops), but I'm still rather ignorant of many technical aspects. In particular, I've no idea what it takes to make it to Featured article status, or how to cite references using wiki-tech (that is, anything but putting a link into the main body of the article). I've looked over your contributions, and my advice is to stop worrying about adminship. You've locked-on to "passing RfA" as a goal, and that's the wrong approach. Wikipedia needs admins who are experienced and trustworthy editors. Gaining the trust of the community takes time: time for other Wikipedians to become familar with you. Experience also takes time: time for you to become familiar with Wikipedia. Of all the things you still have left to learn about Wikipedia's operations, I'd estimate that the admin tools make up about 1 per cent of those. There are lots of cool activities to explore. Wikipedia abounds with many types of content to work on (articles, lists, images, portals, categories, and templates); projects, programs, and departments to participate in, and tools to learn how to use and then make use of. These are every bit as interesting (or more so) than the few extra buttons you get when you are an admin. Editor review would be fine, because feedback is good, but Peer review would be even better. And if what you want to do is get experience with Wikipedia as fast as you can, then here are the places to learn it:

• Editing the actual content of the encyclopedia itself. That's the reason we are all here: to build an encyclopedia for the benefit of the world. Never lose sight of that. And there's a pretty cool side-benefit to editing the encyclopedia: education. Knowledge of the world.
• Wikipedia's help pages (all of them - there's no rush, just start with the ones you find most interesting, and keep going back for more).
• Wikipedia's Community Portal (pick a link, and get involved. And of course, keep going back for more).
• Wikipedia's department directory (explore the Wikipedia community)
• The tips at the tip of the day department (tricks and techniques)
• Wikipedia's help desk (sharing experience is what happens there 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The archives make an excellent read too - there's years of experience recorded in there.)
• Wikipedia's reference desks (sharing knowledge is what happens there 24 hours per day, seven days per week. You'll be surprised what you'll learn there about the world, about the encyclopedia, and how people use it.)
• The village pump (The central discussion areas of Wikipedia)
• Wikipedia's policy and guideline pages
• Administrators' reading list
• Administrators' how-to guide

Hi there. A month or two back I went through the RFA process a bit hastily and understandably failed. In the mean time, I've been trying to follow through with the suggestions ЯEDVERS and (aeropagitica) gave me. I put myself up for editor review a few weeks ago to check to see if I was on track. This is just what I've been looking for! I'd love to become an administrator, primarily to become an integral part of the fight against vandalism. On Wikipedia, I believe that it is inevitable that users either become editors or they become vandal crushers. I want to become the latter, and although I am on the track to eliminating vandalism I need help if I want to become the ultimate vandal-crusher! Anthony, you dont need to be an administrator to be a vandal fighter. In fact, many of our most prolific vandal fighters are not administrators. If, however, you decide to try and RfA at some point, I strongly advise you to change your signature. People oppose you for having a sig that takes up six lines. Zachary, if you wish to help with vandal patrol, a good place to start is Special:Recentchanges. You can find advice on how to do recent change patrol here. Once you have more edits you will be able to apply for special anti-vandal tools which makes removing and reporting vandalism much easier. You will need to have several thousand edits to get through an RfA, so take your time and write good articles, explore the various areas of Wikipedia, get to know other editors and have fun!
