- April 20, 1985: Kent Tekulve was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Philadelphia Phillies for Al Holland and Frankie Griffin (minors).
- In the 1985 June draft, the Pirates select Barry Bonds in the first round.
- August 2, 1985: John Candelaria was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates with George Hendrick and Al Holland to the California Angels for a player to be named later, Pat Clements, and Mike Brown. The California Angels sent Bob Kipper (August 16, 1985) to the Pittsburgh Pirates to complete the trade. [2]
