The 1905 Tour de France was the third Tour de France, held from July 9th to July 30th, 1905. Because previous year was dominated by cheating, the race was changed in several ways: -The stages were shortened so that no night riding occurred. This made the tour stretch into 11 stages, almost double from the previous year. -The winner was selected on a points system, not on overall time. Despite the changes, there were still protesters among the spectators; in the first stage nearly all cyclists punctured due to nails spread along the route.[1] The distance totaled 2,994 km (1,860 mi) and the average cycler's speed was 27.107 km/h. The first major climb, the Ballon d'Alsace, also made its debut in this year's tour.
The race was won by Frenchman Louis Trousselier, who also won 5 of the stages. René Pottier showed that he was unbeatable in the mountains, but following a crash on the first stage he abandoned on the third stage.
