Without the Papal bull, it is not a crusade, at least not officially. Swedish or Finnish historians never call the Birger Jarls failed attack to the Neva River a crusade.

I might say some equally prejudical things of the Russian historians...but let it be. However, I fail to understand your point. What do you mean with this suspicion of "partiality"? How on earth the word "crusade" is impartial in this particular context? Even if there were an evil Finnish medievalist pursuing a sinister anti-Russian agenda (and rest assured: such creatures do not exist anymore), what would he gain by refusing to call Birger Jarl's operation as a crusade?

Is there any particular reason why we should call the Swedish attacks "crusades"? As far as we know, most of them were not called crusades during the Middle Ages. I think King Magnus Eriksson got a Crusade bull for his failed campaign in 1348. However, most of these attacks were dubbed as Crusades only in the 19th century, during the National-Romanticist phase of medieval historiography. 130.234.5.137 15:56, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
