[edit] Story

The series, set in Saitama, follows the story of Ren Mihashi. Mihashi was the previous ace pitcher in his middle school's baseball team, but it seems that he only got the position because his grandfather was the owner of the school. His teammates (especially the team's catcher) hated him, and they always lost their games. Mihashi is thoroughly convinced that he is a lousy baseball pitcher and he graduates to high school with extremely low self-esteem. He then transfers to Nishiura high school with plans of quitting baseball, because he does not believe he is good enough to succeed at baseball. However, he is dragged into Nishiura's baseball team by their coach. Assisted by his new teammates (and especially the catcher, Takaya Abe), he grows in stature, confidence and skill, helping his team excel with his own abilities.

[edit] Creation

While growing up in Saitama, Asa Higuchi became familiar with baseball by reading the manga Dokaben. When she was in high school, the story of a local baseball team wound up inspiring her to come up with the idea for her own baseball manga. Higuchi states that it's the earliest origins of the series, although Mihashi never spoke in the original version, and characters like Momoe, Kanou and Haruna didn't exist yet. Following that, she collected data on high school baseball for over 10 years in order to create the manga, and she worked with the school she had attended in the year prior to the serialization.[2]

Five months prior to the serialization of Ōkiku Furikabutte in Afternoon, Higuchi published a one shot in the magazine titled "The Basic of Basics". The story was centered around the characters of the Musashino Dai Ichi school, who would show up in the series itself.[2]

[edit] Characters

[edit] Nishiura

Ren Mihashi (三橋廉 Mihashi Ren?)
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga
The series's protagonist, a first year in high-school. He is very shy and lacks confidence in himself and is scared easily at the beginning of the series.
He was the ace pitcher in middle-school at Mihoshi Acc, which is run by his grandfather. Due to his grandfather's position the rest of the Mihoshi baseball team believed that Mihashi only got his position as starting pitcher because of his grandfather. Although as stated by Kanou, Mihashi is a good pitcher and has perfect ball control. But the rest of the team refused to believe this and did not see his talent. Because of the constant bullying by his teammates Mihashi transferred to Nishiura high-school.
On his first day Mihashi was forced into becoming the new starting pitcher, by its new female coach. Through the encouragement of his new teammates and friends, namely Abe, the starting catcher, Mihashi gradually becomes more confident in himself.

Takaya Abe (阿部隆也 Abe Takaya?)
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura
Despite being a regular in the Senior League during Middle School, Abe chose to go to Nishiura to join the new baseball team as the starting catcher because he did not want to form a battery with an arogant pitcher, like his partner during middle school. Instead, he finds Mihashi, a pitcher with absolutely no confidence in himself or his pitches. Though Mihashi is a good partner and always follows Abe's leads, Abe easily (and often) loses his temper with Mihashi because of Mihashi's timidness. As the team grows, Abe helps Mihashi to grow as well, and thus learns the importance of his role as catcher, being a good supporting partner for the pitcher.

Yūichirō Tajima - Episode 3
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

Tajima is a clean up hitter and a baseball prodigy, however because of his small build he is unable to hit home runs. He is a naturally out going person and can thus make up for Mihashi's shy nature. Mihashi and Tajima have been shown to get along well as they share their love of baseball and bad school grades. During middle school, his great-grandfather had to go to the hospital, but because no one informed him, he had spent the night at home alone, worrying, while the rest of his family had been at the hospital and then went out to eat dinner, completely forgetting about him. Thus, Tajima decided to attend Nishiura because it is very close to his home (5 minutes away), so if his great-grandfather or his grandparents ever go to the hospital, he would know immediately and not be left behind again.
