Pseudotropheus ist eine Gattung afrikanischer Buntbarsche (Cichlidae). Sie leben endemisch im Malawisee in Ostafrika und gehören zu den an das Biotop der Felsküsten gebundenen Mbuna. Sie sind eng mit der Gattung Melanochromis verwandt. Wie diese haben alle Pseudotropheus größere, zweispitzige, äußere Kieferzähne, während die inneren Kieferzähne klein und dreispitzig sind.
Ihre Schlundzähne sind sehr klein und dicht zusammenstehend. Pseudotropheus-Arten sind Maulbrüter.
