I'm an administrator, which means I can delete, undelete, protect, and unprotect pages, edit protected pages, review the text of deleted pages, block and unblock users, and close AfD, CfD, TfD, RfD, MfD, and DR debates. If you need any of these tasks done, or require assistance with a backlog, leave a comment. If you disagree with an action I made, require assistance with bots, need information from a database query, or require assistance in any other area, leave a message on my talk page. For information about me, see my user page. If the icon on the top right of these pages is green, you can also contact me very quickly via IRC. I am ST47 on the Freenode network, and can also be found in #wikipedia. (If the icon is yellow, I'm probably working on a backlog somewhere, but I'm still available.)

This is an archive of discussions past. Please do not edit this page, and instead visit User talk:ST47 if you want to leave me a comment.

[edit] AWB

Thanks for pearing down the list. I've been meaning to get around to approvals for some time, but I never seem to be on a computer that won't die from loading all the contribs. Anyway, you're approved. alphachimp 18:16, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Great, thanks! ST47Talk 19:23, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] STBot and templates

Howdy! I have a question an edit STbot made. In this, it added an 'uncategorized' template, even though the article has a stub template that places it into a category. I'm guessing that it didn't parse the stub template to see if there was a category involved, would you consider that as an enhancement suggestion? - CHAIRBOY () 15:34, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't think AWB counts stub categories as categories, since the page still is not in the proper categories, and is just listed for maintenance. ST47Talk 17:34, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bug in Tool2

Hi. I noticed your comment here. I used to get the same problem till I realised I hadn't pasted the code in my js file. Do that and it should solve your problem. Cheers! - Aksi_great (talk) 16:08, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] STBot

I don't understand this edit which says "adding template" and in fact removes a template, which I had just added. Tyrenius 02:18, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

It looks like STBot thought that the article was not a stub, probably because of the length, sorry about that. ST47Talk 12:08, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Excellent RFA question!

"You've been here for months, made thousands of edits, and devoted hundreds of hours to Wikipedia without pay or and tangible reward. Above you said why you wanted to be an admin, but why do you want to be a Wikipedian? What was your motivation for joining, and for staying?" This question has helped me decide whether I want to oppose or support a Wikipedian. I wonder if we should add it to the standard questions? - Ta bu shi da yu 04:35, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I like that one. I have thought that we need to change the standard questions for a while anyway, they're getting boring and everyone knows what voters want to see, perhaps I'll bring it up on the RfA talk page once I read a few more responses, unless you will. ST47Talk 12:10, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] STBotD reverted

STBotD had to be reverted thus. --teb728 08:39, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me, I'll have to see if I can prevent that. ST47Talk 12:12, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Farewell ST47

ST, I have decided that I can't continue on wikipedia. I am going to leave for good. I hope this doesn't make a big impact, but I have to do it. I hope you can help make a difference here, and good luck. Farewell -- RyGuy(Retired)

[edit] pisschrist vandal

Although you answerd my question about the squidward vandal you dident answer if thare was a pisschrist vandal and how severe the squidward vandal was?--Crocadog 00:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

The deleted page on the squidward vandal is well, deleted, you're better off asking someone who was around last year about that. I do not ever member hearing about pisschrist, but based on the thing on wikitruth, I would say there was. ST47Talk 00:51, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Its time :)

Hey yeah; its me Arjun. I was wondering if you would like to give RFA another shot; from my view you are an experienced spam/vandal fighter (like me :D) and you have improved greatly since you last RFA's. You are civil and that was a problem in the past. I am not going to create another subpage since I would like you to accept first. Cheers :) ~ Arjun 18:49, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Arjun! I was going to email you sometime this week regarding your offer, and I'd now be glad to accept your nomination! Thank you for your offer and support! ST47Talk 18:52, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Done; here it is. Go get um' buddy :), once you fill in the questions feel free to just transclude it yourself. ~ Arjun 22:24, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, I will. I am also going to write a short statement, so give me 30 minutes or so. ST47Talk 22:27, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Would you mind if I co-nominated? Yuser31415 22:59, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Go ahead, I won't accept right away, let me get my answers in first though. (15 seconds) ST47Talk 23:00, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I've added my nom. Do you have any further suggestions? Yuser31415 23:17, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Spamda

On your RFA you mentioned Spamda. How do I get it and what does it do?--Natl1 (Talk Page) (Contribs) 23:59, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

As m:Spamda says, Spamda is a multi-wiki anti-spam program to assist users in identifying and reverting spam. It takes the feed from the LinkWatcher bot in all the anti-spam channels (such as #wikipedia-en-spam, and #wikipedia-swm-spam) through another bot that distributes all the new links added to Wikipedia evenly among users. This means that if 5 Spamda users are watching the english spam feed, user #1 will only get 1 in 5 messages. User #2 will get a different message, still 1 in 5, etc...
When a diff of a new link addition is received from the bot, it is displayed to the user and the user will have the option to revert, revert and warn with warnings like "spam1", or just leave it. If it detects previous warnings on the user talk, you will also get the option to do a "spam+1" revert&warn, which will warn the user one warning higher than their current warning.
Note: At the time of this writing (19 February 2007) there is no public release of Spamda, and all URLs mentioned on this page will likely not work. Extremely limited testing is underway and development work is continuing. For more information, please visit #Spamda on freenode. ST47Talk 00:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] STBotT edits on Mitchell's Rainforest Snail

Hi, STBoT has tagged and edited the article I wrote on Mitchell's Rainforest Snail. I tried to fix it and made edits as suggested (i.e. intro formatting etc.), but I'm only new here and may well have missed a few things! Would you mind checking for me to see if it is OK now? Cheers --Fnpw 02:27, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem, I've linked it to a few more articles, but it looks like you did a good job yourself. You can use Template:Taxobox to give more information, just look at Wikipedia:Taxobox usage for lots if information. As an animal, you pretty much want to comy and paste this and fill in as many spaces as you can.
{{Taxobox | color = pink
| name = | image = | image_caption = | regnum = [[Animal]]ia | phylum = | classis = | ordo = | familia = | genus = | species = | binomial = | binomial_authority = }}
If there's anything you can't fill in, don't worry about it. Also, we have a few WikiProjects that choose a topic and clean up articles relating to it. You can let them know that your article exists by adding {{WikiProject Gastropods}} to the article's talk page, Talk:Mitchell's rainforest snail. Good luck! ST47Talk 11:41, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Automated message to bot owners

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 05:03, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your RFA

I support you in your RFA. Don't do anything stupid though. Stay calm. I've seen a lot of RFAs blow not by people not being eligible, but by them acting hotheadedly. RedSkunktalk 17:57, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/ST47 4

Good morning (GMT time); please remain civil in line with the official Wikipedia policy, Wikipedia:Civility, at your RfA. My advice is to consult this policy before you post any further edits to your RfA - the high quantity of Strong Opposes to your receiving the tools is - in my humble opinion - because of your incivility towards oppose voters, including one post bordering on a Personal Attack:

"...I don't trust Lantoka. He has a weird name, his sig is in the font "CAC Krazy Legs Bold", and he's editing at 11 PM. I don't see why he should be allowed to help anyone to do anything..."

In addition, another reason why at the moment there appers to be no chance of your RfA being passed is because you are demonstrating you do not understand a key Wikipedia Policy - how can you be expected to understand the more complicated and/or less high-profile ones, such as WP:SOCK, WP:3RR or WP:OFFICE (just random shortcuts to policies I had in the back of my mind). You are eliminating any respect the community may previously have had for you, and I am afraid you may get yourself into hot soup if you continue.

Kindly refrain from incivility at all times.

Kind regards,
Anthonycfc [TC] 00:09, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Removed link - why?

Hello - The European Library gives access to the combined resources of Europe's national libraries. In the El Cid wiki you removed a link to a valuable resource of this library gateway, to be exact to the 14th century El Cid codex (1245>1207). This link adds very relevant information on El Cid... sorry but I like to know your argumentation why you deleted this link. Thanks.Fleurstigter 19:59, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please stop making useless edits.

You are making large numbers of edits which only move a pre-existing stub template below the categories. The next time a pywikipediabot based bot (like most interlanguage bots) edits one of these pages it will move them back because the standard on enwiki is that categories go at the bottom as they are displayed. --Gmaxwell 21:48, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Your bot made this edit, which doesn't make a whole lotta sense. Just thought I'd let you know.--William Thweatt Talk | Contribs 22:41, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

If you refer to the heading change, WP:MOS#Sections_and_headings makes clear that only the first word of a heading, and any proper nouns, should be capitalized, so that edit is correct. Adding the DEFAULTSORT seems constructive to me, as it prevents accidental mis-sorting of the article subject in newly added categories. So I think that edit makes perfect sense. Just my $0.02. PS I'm not the bot operator. --Tkynerd 23:15, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

In December, the bot linked ATOS to a French wikipedia article, ATOS. Someone removed it (correctly), but then someone put it back. Now, the bot just updated the link to the French wikipedia article that is redirected from fr:ATOS, which is equally wrong. [edit] Hi. Question about your bot.

Hi ST47. I am aware that you have a bot known as STBot that is capable at removing or changing categories. I was wondering if your bot is able to categorize bird articles according to the countries they are native to? For example: African Firefinch, Common Waxbill. These bird articles have more than 10 categories, thus it is extremely tedious to do it manually. Luffy487 12:01, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

I'd need some sort of reference to use. Given a list of pages and a list of categories, I can do this with perlwikipedia, simply by saying if ($content=~m/USA|US|United States/i) {$editor->edit($page, $content . "\nCategory:Birds of USA"); However, it'd need some source, either from a category or from a list. Let me know if that would work. ST47Talk 18:26, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
Well I am a bot illiterate. I don't understand what kind of source u required. Haha. But nevertheless you can try. Luffy487 09:15, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
I just need something like a list of birds, I suppose a category would work. ST47Talk 10:36, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh i see. There are many different lists of species of birds. For example: Estrildid finch, Falconidae, Tinamou and etc. You can get the lists from an external link: birdlife.org Luffy487 06:34, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Hey I just tried out AWB. I guess I know what u want. What I am asking for is to automatically replace category such as Category: Fauna of Indonesia from Aves articles into Category: Birds of Indonesia. Thanks! Luffy487 08:20, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I see. Is there consensus for this somewhere? ST47Talk 10:32, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Am I in Trouble?

Help! Today I thought I had finally mastered all pertinent rules and procedures to accomplish what Wikipedia classifies as no more than a "minor" edit to existing articles (i.e., addition of an external link). I did so for eight carefully selected articles to no avail.

All eight edits were quickly deleted. The added links were to a unique compilation of twenty years of government-level expertise geared to need-to-know end-users likely interested in each of the eight topics. But, I gather that someone or something has determined the additions to be spam.

The deleted external link in question isn't a scam, isn't to sell anything, and isn't to promote anyone. Nor is it designed to impress search engines. The only purpose is to enhance understanding by augmenting topically pertinent articles. World-class research institutions already link to it.

I had started by drafting an email to Wikipedia asking for its permission to grant a link only to detect no suitable addressee. Can you please tell me what's wrong with the added links? Beats me? Please feel free to scan the site cited in the deleted edits and satisfy yourself. Look like spam?

To whom is an apology extended? From where is permission granted? Is the deleted link now on some blacklist? If so, how to delete it?

Please give it to me in simple English. Thanks! CCS 04:21, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Good morning sir. Thanks for your contributions! As an encyclopedia, We are not a repository of links. Links are usually added for two reasons, as a source for an article or as further reading. Now, we have a WP:COI page that deals with conflicts of interest, as the founder of that website, we'd prefer that you try to contribute to areas in which you are not directly involved. Also, the page really doesn't seem to offer further information for readers. The page has been added to a list of links that require a revert on sight by a bot. You aren't blocked right now, so you're free to contribute. As for adding the link, I'd try the "village pump" as a way to ask others about the link. Thanks! ST47Talk 10:50, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your thoughtful and prompt assistance. I'll try to engage on the Talk page or one or more of the Wikipedia articles thought most relevant. Before I do, please help me understand what you mean by: The page has been added to a list of links that require a revert on sight by a bot. If my engagement with others is successful, will there be something blocking addition of an external link to my website? If so, what must I or they do about it? Thanks! CCS 13:56, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Have yet to hear back from you. Thought I'd try again. CCS 19:33, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry. It's possible that User:Beetstra blacklisted it within a bot, shadowbot, you should ask him and give a link to the discussions. ST47Talk 20:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Clarify

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use
Welcome, and thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and it has been reverted or removed. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. instead of . This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. ST47Talk 12:38, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
You sent me that message. Could you please clarify on what it means? Thanks! Wikihermit 18:31, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
WP:SUBST should explain it ;) ST47Talk 18:40, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Substing

Yes, I have been putting subst: in front of templates since I recieved a comment about a week ago. You must of caught one mistake of mine, to which I didn't put it on, but I do put subst: in front of templates already, as you will see in my contributions if you look. Please use an edit summary when removing specific information from articles. That would be useful. I don't see why you removed this edit, for example, although I can guess that it's because that article contains non-noteworthy things. (However, there are many more links just like it on that page, provided mostly as a reference, so I still don't really see why this one in particular was removed.) —msikma (user, talk) 07:00, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

I hope this is the correct place to respond ....

Thanks for your response ST47, but please re-read the following. Our I SPY FORUM is NOT a casual message board. We are the main source for all current news about this 60s show. We have been around for 8 years, and have served as consultants on the new I SPY Book and on the I SPY CD. We are in touch with many of the production staff of the program. AND we HAVE BEEN linked to this Wikipedia page (and the one for ROBERT CULP) since 2005!!

IFWikipedia's purpose is to help disseminate infomation about a topic, then our site should definitely be included for current and relevant information on "I SPY" ....

Thank you and your help is appreciated!! Tatia Loring

We are NOT a typical message board, but the active participant in keeping the spirit of "I SPY" alive. We are in touch with production staff, writers, etc. from the show. Our site (as an "external link" was deleted the other day on both pages - I thought this was done in error and re-added our site, to find that it is gone again today. PLEASE check our site!!! Please do not dismiss the valuable and relevant content we offer because the word FORUM is in our title. We should be included on Wikipedia, as we are the most current and actively contributing site for information on "I SPY" available out there - and it's a disservice to your readers, if we are not included on these two pages. We've been a part of these Wikipedia pages for so long, please help us get re-instated. Thank you, Tatia Loring Tatia Loring 04:03, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

It's a discussion site, where people talk to other people about stuff. It had been spammed, so it's automatically removed now, and it's against policy, so all the links were removed. [edit] Link Removed on Bad Girls link section?

Why was the link to the Helen & Nikki message board removed from the Bad Girls link section? I re-read the Wikipedia external link guidelines, and none of the categories of prohibited links pertains in this case. I'm not the person who added that link in the first place, but it does happen to be one of the 3 or so message boards which actually have substantive discussion of the television program. The Bad Girls links section still contains links to other message boards with less substantive discussions (including a link to a message board which isn't even about the show!), and other sites which are specific to a single character. So what makes this link different such that it had to be deleted? Jtattenbaum 14:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

It is a link to a message board. "Substantive discussion" doesn't contribute anything to the wiki, and WP:EL is policy, current practice is not. Go right ahead and remove the rest of the links to forums if you want to. ST47Talk 18:57, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the clarification. I deleted all the other links to message boards/forums. Jtattenbaum 19:17, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Are you a Wikipediholic Test

Hi ST47,

I saw you proclaiming yourself as 3rd in the Wikipediholic Test. I checked over your contributions, and you seem to be a positive contributor, and from this, your score seemed believeable. However, I found out that the highest possible score is about 1038670, which is significantly lower than what you had posted. Although I can't say this for sure, but I suspect cheating, which your score will be reverted. Please discuss this matter at the project's talkpage, or on my talk page.

[edit] Wikipedia:Request an account

I've significantly updated the text of Wikipedia:Request an account/preload. The new template, if used properly, should make it a hell of a lot easier for your bot to archive the requests. I'm changing some of the new requests to the preloaded format, and I'd be interested in your comment. Thanks for your help! alphachimp 23:09, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

If it's used properly and consistently, it would be great! I'm going to look for the archiving system if there is one. ST47Talk
I'll be honest, the last two users completely borked it. We'll keep playing with it and see if we can get a better template name than Template:LEAVE THIS TEXT UNCHANGED. alphachimp 23:37, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
OK, easy enough. What are the criteria for archiving? (perhaps we can use a template such as {{done}} to signify completion?) For the template, how about "PUT YOUR USERNAME AND EMAIL HERE"? ST47Talk 23:41, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Would it be possible to check whether the account was created by an existing user? I tried changing it to Template:Enter username and email on the right. alphachimp 23:43, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Mabye. I'll look into it. ST47Talk 23:46, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm going to try that, be back in 5 minutes. ST47Talk 23:56, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

I posted the request, let me know if I misinterpreted anything. Also, consider if you would like to run it, so you can run it when you need to instead of on a strict schedule. ST47Talk 10:50, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Scheduled sounds fine to me, but I'd be more than willing to host it if you ever want. It looks like most users are following the new format, so that should be of some help. alphachimp 14:29, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for creating this bot! Can you not remove requests that are similar to existing accounts, please? They can be created but only by an admin. Tra (Talk) 20:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

In fact, it would be even better if you could get the bot to add a comment to the request, stating what the account is similar to, if that's possible. Tra (Talk) 20:50, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Impossible - the bot was only archiving requests that an editor said was too close, not actually determining this itself. ST47Talk 20:53, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AccReqBot

On Wikipedia:Request an account, AccReqBot is removing requests that are "too close" to existing user names. There is a discussion on the talk page of not denying those requests outright, but having administrators review them to determine if the existing account is that of an active user. Could you have the bot stop removing "too close" requests for now? Thanks, jwillburtalk 20:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

OK, code deleted. How do administrators register that the name is "Too Close"? ST47Talk 20:47, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Apparently it is an administrator privledge to be able to create accounts that regular users are not allowed to create (i.e. usernames that are too similar to existing usernames). I'm not an administrator, but that's how I understand it. jwillburtalk 21:26, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
No, I mean to say, how do they record it - is a template used that the bot can archive? ST47Talk 22:51, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
As far as I'm aware, the only way to find out if a username is similar to another account is to attempt to create an account under that name. Unfortunately, you are only told about the similarity if you fill in the captcha, which would hinder the bot being able to do this. On WP:ACC, no standardised template is used for similar accounts; instead a statement of what it's similar to and a brief summary of that account is placed underneath the request. These requests won't need to be archived since they can be handled as normal, but only by an administrator, so they can just sit around on the page for a bit longer. Tra (Talk) 23:01, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

When the bot removes a name as "already exists", does that meanit was recently created or was created anytime? I'm asking because users that request a name that already exists may not know and simply removing their request doesn't seem like the best way to deal with this. John Reaves (talk) 19:55, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

It means that it's been created, but not by a user. If the IP (or a ~~~~) were added to the template, I could post to the IP. ST47Talk 23:42, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Is it possible for the bot to send e-mails? If so, it could e-mail the requester to tell them that the username has been taken by using the address they specify. Tra (Talk) 00:12, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Excellent idea! I'll go look for a SMTP module on CPAN. ST47Talk 10:14, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
SMTP tested and implemented, I'm on the CC for now just to make sure it's working. ST47Talk 20:03, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
That's great! Do you think it would be possible to get the bot to ignore requests to register the account 'USERNAME' as that usually indicates that the form hasn't been filled in properly, and those requests would need to be dealt with by hand. Also, completed requests are archived by month, e.g. Wikipedia:Request an account/April 2007 for the current month, rather than /Log. Thanks, and keep up the good work! Tra (Talk) 16:51, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Whoops - archiving fixed. Also, if the username is "USERNAME", it will skip. ST47Talk 17:13, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks; can you make it add the name to the correct day and above the {{Wikipedia:Request an account/Footer|April|2007}} bit as well (but skip it entirely if the name is already on the list)? Sorry to keep on bothering you! :-) Tra (Talk) 19:33, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
They're still not going in under the right day. Could you take another look, please? Thanks very much. Tra (Talk) 12:46, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Is there any way the bot could add a welcome template to new user's talk pages? John Reaves (talk) 05:21, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

I apologize for the accidental collateral, but I do not intend to restore the part that I haven't restored, and I ask that you do not do so either. ST47Talk 02:39, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:UP

Hi! I wanted to give you a friendly reminder of a newer addition to policy. Due to the reversion on your userpage, I'm sure that you weren't aware of it, it's a rather new addition. The new section states that The Wikipedia community generally frowns upon simulating the MediaWiki interface, and it should be avoided. As a guideline, it is not set in stone, however it is generally accepted among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow and should be treated with common sense and the occasional exception, which links to Ignore all rules. IAR requires that the rules prevent you from improving the wiki, however some slack is given to this wording as long as your edits either reflect consensus or improve the wiki. Please make the necessary edits to your userpage so it abides with community consensus! Thanks, ST47Talk 23:14, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I'm aware of the extremely silly dispute. I'm also aware that the section is not new, and that you are not the first person to go around editing other user's user pages based on it. I am also aware that the last person to do so was reprimanded. It is "frowned upon", not forbidden, and doesn't give you the right to remove it from my user page. Do all the "frowning" you like on my talk page (might I suggest that you use an emoticon for the purpose?), but please do not edit my user page again. The rule says that it is to be "avoided", not removed. Please follow the rule and avoid looking at my user page and it will cease to bother you. Have a nice day! :-) IPSOS (talk) 12:31, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Syntax change on WP:ACC

Hi, there's discussions about changing the template used on WP:ACC at Wikipedia_talk:Request_an_account#Updated_Preload_Text. Would it be possible for your bot to be modified to accept these changes? Thanks. Tra (Talk) 14:43, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar

The Original Barnstar
Thank you so much for helping rid Wikipedia of the hellishly annoying fake "you have messages" boxes. For an active editor like myself, who regularly does have new messages, these fake boxes are extremely irritating and a waste of my time. A thank you isn't enough AFAIC, so please accept this barnstar! :) --kingboyk 19:22, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Why, thank you! ST47Talk 19:24, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Editing user pages

Greetings would you kindly refrain from this type of edit? There was never any consensus to do that. The only consensus that was arrived at was to politely request users to remove such things on their own which I see you've never done. Thanks. Netscott 20:56, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Another consensus principle was that straight removing them on the pages of inactive users (users who hadn't edited in months) was completely acceptable as well. Netscott 21:18, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Check STBot's clock...

Hi St47, Please check that you've configured the NTP clock you are using for STBOT correctly on #WikiCast as it appears to have drifted considerably (by as much as 10 mins currently)

Also you are needed on the #WikiCast channel ASAP ShakespeareFan00 16:22, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mastroianni

Hello,

I wanted to add some things to the page on Marcello Mastroianni since I think it is rather sparse. Why were my things removed? Do I need citations for everything?

I am new to this, and I really just want his entry to be better.

[edit] AccReqBot malfunctioning

Could you stop the bot? It seems to be malfunctioning. When it removes a request for an account that already exists, it also deletes part of the next request, like this. jwillburtalk 18:08, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Toolserveraccount

Hello ST47,
please send your real-name, your prefered login-name and the public part of your ssh-key to image:zedler-admins.png. We plan to create your account soon then. --DaB. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.59.29.211 (talk) 23:00, 13 April 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Regarding Intellibot"

Hello, thank you for responding to my thoughts on a new bot, to show you what I mean...look at this article, and the bot may or may not be able to show you how enter a calculation which would be appropriate to that equation on a calculator or give an actual example. As I said before, it would be nice if it did result in this theory 'bot' but if it didn't I would appreciate the thought you put in to asking me what I meant. (Sorry about the late reply also) Radio_Orange (talk • contribs) 19:45, 15 April 2007 (UTC).

Well, I don't see how it would be able to do this - unfortunately, bots aren't all that intelligent. ST47Talk 21:12, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BirthdayBot

I am currently running Windows, so is there any way you can get it to run on a Windows-based machine? If not, how do I run the bot? Otherwise, I could run it on the toolserver if things get to that stage, right?. I am going on a WikiBreak from around 11am UTC until Saturday, so if you want to email me the source and some installation instructions, that should be fine, but I do want to get it running soon (on my Windows computer, if possible). Many thanks, Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 08:04, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

(also replying via email)Well, the bot is written in Perl, and uses the Perlwikipedia framework, which, for reasons I have not had time to determine yet, will not work on windows. I do have a toolserver account, so that would be an option, or you can ask for one, however a WP:BRFA should probably be posted - I'll do it around 6PM UTC, after I set up a stream for wikicast, unless you do it first. Mabye we can get it to work under windows. ST47Talk 10:13, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
As I am going off on holidays very soon, could you possibly set it all up for me on your own toolserver account and get it trialling perhaps with a bot flag under my username? I know this is a big favour, but it would be much appreciated. I have just requested a toolserver account and will follow that up on the weekend when I return. That way when I get the account for the server, you could possibly help me transfer it and get it all running. If that is too hard or you can't, dont worry as there is no reason to keep it non-running for a little while as its not that urgent. Also, could you give me a few specs on the bot itself (programming language, suggested name, etc). I would like to call it BirthdayBot. I have created the account and I will send you the credentials (username/password) soon via email if you wish to run it from today on your server until about Saturday. Kind regards, Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 20:44, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
It seems BirthdayBot is taken, but you can name it. Something like EventBot or equivalent. I'm off on holidays now, so I will probably return to find the bot making some edits, which will be a good sign. I have requested for a toolserver account, that should require approval which I will do when I come back. Many thanks for your help, Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 20:57, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I made that name a few days ago. I'll post a BRFA now. ST47Talk 21:09, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks so much for this. It's much appreciated. So, you're right to run it for a while until I return from holidays and get my toolserver account? Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 21:16, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Sure. ST47Talk 21:28, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for that. I really appreciate it. I am off now to a great vacation and will be back on Saturday. Good luck with the BRFA and trials. Farewell! Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 21:31, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AccReqBot adding the same user many times

Today, I notices that your bot, AccReqBot, added gladyskattam 24 times to Wikipedia:Request an account/April 2007. According to the history of the page, Tra also removed such duplicates. Please fix your bot so it only adds the name to the list once. Od Mishehu 10:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

If it helps, I've noticed that this problem usually occurs when the bot is unable for some reason to remove the request from WP:ACC, so it goes into a loop constantly adding the name, since it thinks that the request still needs to be archived. Maybe a good way to solve this problem would be for the bot to check if the username is already listed on the log (in any capitalisation) and only add the name if it's not already there. This would also be useful to prevent problems where both a human editor and the bot add the name to the list. Tra (Talk) 16:11, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BAG Bot

Hi - would it be possible to get the bot to recognise the Withdrawn by operator. template? Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Ocobot_2 is an example where the bot failed to recognise that the task had bee withdrawn. Thanks, Martinp23 12:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

OK, I'll do that now. ST47Talk 18:03, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bbot

I must strongly suggest you cease operating this bot. Much discussion has gone into the topic a while back (don't remember the exact pages though, sorry) and it was decided the bot would go against our main objective which is to improve the community, not post automatic wishes, especially when the wishes are just templates. I've posted this at the talks of both Extranet and ST47, I suggest discussion continues on ST47's page. +Hexagon1 (t) 06:52, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

It isn't being operated, I ran one dry test. This conversation should DEFINITELY be going on at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BirthdayBot. ST47Talk 10:22, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I am now back from a very relaxing vacation, could you please tell me whats going on with the bot? Cheers! Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 04:45, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
The BRFA is going on. ST47Talk 10:08, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Section

Hi ST47.

I'm not sure this is the correct venue for this comment, but maybe you can help. I posted an essay I wrote, and it's listed as a possible copyright infringement. I came across the notice at this location:

http://www.search.com/reference/Hellenism_and_the_Jews

I am the author, I researched the content for a lecture series, and I allowed it to be published to the web site: http://www.csjo.org/pages/essays/essayhellenism.htm

There is no copyright infringement, and I don't know how to get the notice removed.

Can you help?

Best Regards,

Jeff Zolitor

[edit] Bot

Your account request bot has gone wrong, i think, it appears to have added the same name to the archive tens of times, please fix. Thanks. GDonato (talk) 22:52, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

It looks like the bot doesn't enjoy archiving username requests with question marks (?) in them... This might help. Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 23:00, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
I managed to stop it adding that username by removing the relevant request from WP:ACC. This problem does happen sometimes quite often with some usernames. Tra (Talk) 23:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
It seems to have gone the other way now, and recently it hasn't been adding any names at all to the log, but it is removing them from the main page. Tra (Talk) 13:58, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Articles

hello there :-) how are articles submitted after being written? is this even the right place to ask? Counternut 00:14, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, you need to be registered for 4 days before being able to create articles, but in order to do it, first go to any page and look at the url - it says http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_Name - replace Article_Name with the name of your article, and hit enter. Now, click edit this page, paste your text, and click "save". ST47Talk 03:00, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

would you remove me again from your bot? I am not a vandalist.

It isn't a vandal-ist-list, and I really don't see why you would care that your name is there, it contains the names of everyone that edited since the 27th, when I started it, and doing a username check for every edit would be a pain on server resources. The bot was sadly declined. From most of the comments, they look like they need a prior community discussion. Do you think you could start a discussion at the village pump, or do you just want to leave it for now? Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 11:12, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
