quickUnwatch
Check out my prototype for a tentative gadget: [1] (add it to your monobook and check out the "(-w)" links on your watchlist). I'd appreciate feedback, especially if it fails.
Oh, and thank you for the support on RFA -- but then again, of course I've been civil to you, we have no beef (au contraire). :-) --Gutza T T+ 20:57, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- P.S. On occasion it appears to fail even though it actually works -- I believe this is related to server cache, because upon reloading the watchlist manually the article proves to have been removed. --Gutza T T+ 21:00, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
-
- Heh, if it'll fail anywhere, it'll probably be for me :) I use Iceweasel for a browser, and, I've got my own local squids :P my monobook has been a near-constant stream of problems, even with very stable tools like Twinkle :) (For a week, for no reason, TW started replacing every instance of "ff" on every enwiki page, with "ffi", took me forever to figure out :) I.e. (diff) showed up as (diffi), I mean every instance, on every part of the interface :P)
-
- That being said, clicking (-w) seems to do nothing for me, in iceweasel, I'll try opera, in a moment. (It should be noted, that on my last try, I got "Due to high database server lag, changes newer than 32 seconds might not be shown in this list.")... Yep, same thing in Opera. (-w) shows up, but, doesen't seem to be removing pages from my watchlist. If there's any sort of diagnostic information I can give you, lemme know :) SQLQuery me! 21:14, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Have you tried reloading manually? Is it still there? --Gutza T T+ 21:22, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yep, I did a ctrl-shift-r, to install the app, then, when that didn't work, I killed iceweasel, re-opened it, cleared all cookies and cache, closed it again, re-opened it, and tried again, which, didn't get it either (it looks like it's trying to do something, but, not accomplishing it for some reason). Same basic procedure in Opera... SQLQuery me! 21:28, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
No, I meant this: you clicked on "-w", it turned to "…", it reloaded the watchlist and the article was still there — have you tried manually reloading the watchlist itself to check whether you were actually still watching the article? --Gutza T T+ 21:31, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
-
- Hehe! I must not have been paying attention :) This last time, I clicked it, and, the item (in this case, Wikipedia:Sandbox) dissapeared from my watchlist. The actual number of watchlisted items, seems not to change, however, which, was what I was looking at I think :) SQLQuery me! 21:40, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
No, you were probably right -- check out the post scriptum to my original message above. So, great news, it works even for you! :-) Now, which browser did it work in and which one didn't it work in, after all? --Gutza T T+ 21:45, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- It seems to be working in both. (Iceweasel is mainly firefox with Debian specific patches. For some reason it's a little less than stable for me) SQLQuery me! 01:13, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Barneca, I'm actually glad you've eavesdropped, you identified a real bug. I know what the problem is, I'll try to fix it today. --Gutza T T+ 08:33, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Me again. It should work fine now, please confirm. (Don't forget to clear your cache before testing.) --Gutza T T+ 10:28, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Confirmed, with one caveat that I've taken to your talk page to prevent poor SQL suffering through constant yellow message bars. --barneca (talk) 15:48, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Please be advised there's an alternative to quickUnwatch. --Gutza T T+ 21:18, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you -- I didn't want to pull favors on you, in an ideal world a self-nomination should be equal to a "proper" nomination (I know that's not really the case, but I'm idealistic that way). --Gutza T T+ 21:22, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

For your work as an admin, blocking those TOR nodes! Solumeiras (talk) 15:50, 31 January 2008 (UTC) |
P.S. It should be safe to unblock 84.45.219.185 (talk · contribs) now, a user on Wikisource has said it looks like it's safe to unblock it now.
- Why thank you! :) I'll check with jpgordon in a bit, and see what he thinks. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it started going crazy again if I unblocked it... And, I don't know if I want to embarrass myself again, sticking my neck out for a known abusive IP.... SQLQuery me! 14:32, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- There does appear to be a good user on the IP - see s:User:84.45219LS - who's left a note over on Lar's talk page there about it. He does appear to have made some good contributions there, but whether he wants to edit here I don't know - I'll have to ask him on Wikisource. Thanks, --Solumeiras (talk) 17:17, 1 February 2008 (UTC) (P.S. What is the correct interwiki for the English Wikisource, I've replaced this a few times here on your talk!)

Look at the AFD. Consensus was to keep. Turning these articles that have been on Wikipedia since 2004 and 2005 into redirects without consensus or even any discussion is disruptive and should be considered vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mystra (goddess) (talk • contribs) 09:04, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
- Socking, and disruptively using a wide range of IP addresses, to get your way, is unlikely to convince me that those arguments have any merit. SQLQuery me! 14:42, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
User:SQL/Funky TOR
I didn't even know the page existed! Now I do, I've made it my daily job to chip away at these (I'll try and do 50 or so a day). Someone else can do the ones Mercury posts from his list to WP:AN/I. Can your bot run more than once every 24 hours? (Twice a day or every 6 hours would reduce duplication between the two sets of lists). Neıl ☎ 15:22, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Heh, IIRC, mercury derives his from mine :) I actually, was just running the script "whenever I had time to unblock 10-20", but, I'll crontab it per-6 hours :) SQLQuery me! 15:42, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

- The bot is reporting 149.9.0.56, 149.9.0.57 and 149.9.0.59 as "Blocked, not TOR", but they're definitely still TOR nodes ([2], [3], [4]). Neıl ☎ 12:12, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- I've noticed a few, that rapidly jump back and forth, one of the primary reasons, that I don't just have the bot handle it....
Another thing that might be happening, is that they don't allow wikipedia exit.Could also be that the checker process timed out (a timeout, sadly yeilds the same result as a negative. I'll throttle the process back a bit (can't slow it down too much, however, it already takes 30 mins to run :P ), and see if that doesen't help. Either way, good thing good old humans like you and I are reviewing them :) Let me know, if you see any more like that, one after another, that's a pretty good sign that it might be choking. Have you checked out a working copy using cvs co? Tell me what works and what doesn't work exactly. --Gutza T T+ 08:27, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Indefinite block really necessary?
Regarding this block: Isn't blocking a user with account creation blocked indefinitely a bit overkill for four silly misplaced edits to one article? I could understand 48 hours or something, but infinitely? I just thought I'd bring it up, I know how easy it is to make quick decisions in the heat of the battle. If you feel this comment is misplaced then please ignore it, I'm out of my depth here. Cheers, Pumpmeup 10:02, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- I agree, on the ACB aspect of it, I'll tweak that in a moment (force of habit, good catch!). I figured, he started off, blanking that section, and replacing it with "POO", and the went on repeatedly edit warring, to add gibberish in place of established, well-sourced content... I just don't see that account as being used for anything besides vandalism. Anyhow, if I missed something obvious, or, I'm being oblivious, let me know :) And, thanks again, for the catch on the ACB portion! SQLQuery me! 10:09, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Mistagging by SQLBot
I've been observing SQLBot's contributions, especially tagging talk pages with the Firearms project tag, but what stuck out to me was that a number of these pages are not related to firearms in the slightest. For example, Miao dao is a sword, not a firearm, yet I found the firearms tag on its talk page, and it was added by SQLBot. Could you please address this?-LWF (talk) 20:53, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- It works by categories (I think, I need a talkpage header explaining this...), and, that one got hit because it was in Category:World_War_II_Chinese_infantry_weapons (as the edit summary should have explained). Most of the time, I was following it, since, sometimes a few like that slip through in this case, I hadn't looked at a couple categories deeply enough, and, they contained a few non-related articles, most of the time, however, they contained more relevant than non-relevant. I'd actually started to go behind it and clean up the few that slipped through, but, something came up and I got distracted, and didn't get back to it. Anyhow, I'll poke through it again when I get home tonight (I'm actually getting ready to head to the range :) ), thanks for the note. SQLQuery me! 21:34, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
I think Circular Error Probable is a mis-tag. It is "ballistics" - but I've never heard it used for firearms. Just bombs and missiles... ComputerGeezer (talk) 22:22, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Microtech
How can an article about the company who builds a US made Steyr AUG not be about firearms? --Mike Searson (talk) 15:15, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- From the lead:
Microtech Knives, Inc. is a knife manufacturing company that was founded in Vero Beach, Florida in 1994 and operated there until relocating to Bradford, Pennsylvania in 2005.[1]
- It's an article about a knife manufacturing company, There isn't a single mention in the article about it being a firearms manufacturer. And, the AUG is manufactured by Steyr Mannlicher, not Microtech Knives. SQLQuery me! 15:32, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- Ahh, I see, you've copied the relevant paragraph, formatting and all, directly out of Steyr AUG, to make the article fit the wikiproject. Since Microtech Small Arms Research is a separate, and very different company (albeit a subsidiary), what would you think about finding some reliable sources, and starting an article on them? Seems like it'd make sense to me. SQLQuery me! 16:02, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- Actually, if you check the history, there was a brief mention earlier, but it wasn't in the top section...I took what was in Steyr AUG and placed it there temporarily. I agree with your suggestion, although I am not sure what is out there in print media, yet. I have heard from reliable industry sources that all of their knife projects are going on the backburner in support of the rifle project(so the people building/selling knives will be building/selling rifles). (I had one of their rifles on order until I realized I already own 18 rifles in 5.56 and don't really need another.) Let me see what I can turn up this weekend on sources, also...how could I start a wiki project on knives and cutlery, even though there is some crossover with guns...it really is a different "animal".--Mike Searson (talk) 22:18, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

- I think the idea of a Wikiproject:Cutlery sounds absolutely fascinating! I'll look around, and see if I can figure out how to do so :) I'll also look at what I can dig up to start that article... I wish I knew what you meant about having too many firearms in one caliber :P My wife set the 20-rifle safe as my limit, and I'm already at the point where I'd have to trade one, in order to have room for another :( SQLQuery me! 06:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Please ask him to refrain from playing edit wars under this thread:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_China_presidential_election%2C_2008
He is letting his political views (pro-KMT) influence his editing and has resorted to playing edit games with me. For example, when I tried to balance his one-side article in support of Ma Ying-jeuo, he cited the "no copying rule". However, while I can understand this rule would allow him to erase long quotations in my edits, he went further to modify other parts of the article not subject to this rule. As a result, I think he is trying to hide under this rule. What I did was to clearly state that Ma Ying-jeuo's proclamation of innocence is under Ma's own beliefs, and therefore it is justified to say "Ma believes" XYZ. Thanks. Funky TOR
Just checking before unfunkying some of those - After confirming that 2nd part of the list are no longer TOR exit nodes, it's OK to unblock, and those that have the TOR marked on the user talk pages, I assume that the TOR message should be removed. I don't see anything templated as a "clear" message for these... anything that should be noted on those pages? Thanks for putting together the list! 01:18, 12 February 2008 (UTC) (From SkierRMH (talk · contribs))
- Yep, I've done it a few ways so far... in the beginning, I {{tlx}}'ed the {{tor}} template, then, I just removed it... more lately, a couple of us have been simply deleting the talkpage, if there's no history other than a {{tor}} being put on there. Thank you, for helping! :) SQLQuery me! 03:51, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Pio.Gif
Hey Sql,
I appreciate your message. The image itself isn't copyrighted and I have explained that to Betacommand. The page itself is. The image (www.oceansideemmaus.org/Pio.gif) itself is not copyrighted - and as far as proof - take a look at www.oceansideemmaus.org. There's no copyright visible on the page, nor in the source code, nor in the comments on the image (Readable using GIMP[TM}, Photoshop or any other program. As I said, the image isn't copyrighted and as such it violated no usage guidelines. As far as removing Betacommands tag, well, this has all been explained to him and he continues to tag, therefore, I'm treating it as vandalism, and as such , that can be reverted contiuously :)
Thanks! KoshVorlon ".. We are ALL Kosh..." 14:19, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
SQL,
I don't mind the long message. Issue is this, The image is not copyrighted, therefore it's not in violation of policy. I've explained that multiple times and someone (<COUGH> Betacommandbot <Cough>) keeps tagging the image. I tagged it the way I did, because it seems to be the most honest tag. It IS an image from another website, therefore I won't dare say it's my own. It's not copyrighted, but neither is it explicity released as free use either. Therefore, to me, the most honest tag I can place on it is that it did come from another website with no copyright attached to it. Thanks again! KoshVorlon ".. We are ALL Kosh..." 15:28, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Gun nuts
As opposed to "anti-gun nuts", a term I've heard the gun nuts use. I'm in the middle ground of this issue (or the crossfire, so to speak). On my old user page I had a position box that said something like, "I believe in gun control, especially for others." Ya follow? >:) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 17:35, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
- I can't say it really matters to me what your political leanings are. I only made the comment about appearing "bias'ed", for your benefit, as appearing to have a strong bias one way or another, may make it difficult for you to effectively collaborate with other users on that article. As far as that term goes, it appeared to me as though you were using it to describe other editors. Commenting on the contributor, and, not the content very rarely turns out to be helpful in a collaborative editing environment. If I've completely misread what's going on, then, I offer my sincerest apologies to you. Either way, thanks for getting back to me. SQLQuery me! 17:48, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

- Humor can be therapeutic, but not everyone gets it. I have addressed both sides of this issue in my comments on the page. And if you look past the gun nuts comment, you'll see that I was arguing their position for them. Every one of these shootings brings the gun-control advocates out of the woodwork, and nothing comes of it, hence there is no point in bringing it up in the article. The paragraph in the article that states the school's gun policy, with no context, is also irrelevant and should be removed. The fact of where the guy got the guns might be relevant. However, I'm not about to be editing articles that are in an extreme state of flux. In that situation, more discussion is needed and less tinkering with the article. That would be the wikipedia way. Unfortunately, human nature is what it is. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 17:50, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

- Gallows humor is not just my approach. Do you remember all the Christa McAuliffe jokes that circulated after the Challenger explosion in 1986? Did it occur to you why they focused on Christa instead of the crew as a whole or any other member of the crew? It's because she, the unsuspecting civilian, was the one we cared about the most and mourned the most. Do you see what I'm getting at? Now let me tell you my initial reaction when I heard that a plane had hit the WTC on 9/11/01: "It must have been an architecture critic!" The tears and anguish came later. - I do sometimes have a tendency to assume that others get the joke. Thanks back at ya, for discussing it. :) P.S. Another example: I was at the Minneapolis Red Cross office recently. They are a block from the I-35W bridge. I told them they should plan their other offices to also be near potential disaster sites. They found that funny. I think. P.P.S. My sense of humor is similar to that of my father and grandfather. So I blame genetics. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 18:44, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
