User:Eaaadmin account creation

Hi – While I was in the process of denying the above account request, because it contains "admin", you created it. Usernames with 'admin', 'steward', and the like aren't permitted because they can imply authority where none exists.

I will have to block the account indefinitely and ask them to create a new username. Please read the username policy carefully, and understand it before you create user accounts again. Thanks. :-) - KrakatoaKatie 12:27, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks...
Thank you for showing your support for me in my recent RfA. Unfortunately, I was unable to earn the required consensus and did not succeed. I do hope to put in another request in a few months, once I have improved upon the concerns addressed by the rest of the participants. Your expressed trust in me will definitely help me reach that goal. Thank you again, and happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:27, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm going to need it :) - Caribbean~H.Q. 06:24, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

User:SQL/Reflist

Tried to open the page User:SQL/Reflist but I just got a white screen. This message Due to high database server lag, changes newer than 3354 seconds might not be shown in this list. is also showing on my watch list, so it might just be a current db issue. Jeepday (talk) 13:13, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I think everything's just sorta screwy right now :( It's also a HUGE page, at this point, too, however. ~290K, and, nearly 10,000 entries... So, that might have something to do with it. It did the white screen thing to me, too, a bunch, however, since about 8am EST... before that, it was OK... SQL(Query Me!) 13:16, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Looks like the page is working now. I posted it at Wikipedia talk:Unreferenced articles that might draw some help. I will also keep an eye on stubsensor when it gets close to finished we might be able to draw some of those editors in to User:SQL/Reflist. Jeepday (talk) 02:17, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Thank you! :) SQL(Query Me!) 04:08, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Bot messages

The "nasty message" comes from a seemingly ever-growing bitterness towards maybe about half of Wikipedia, which never seems to stop getting more ridiculous and hypocritical. Thanks for the template suggestion. — [ ric | opiaterein ] — 14:11, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Heh, when I got un-lazy, and forced myself to make a simple XML parser, so I could work from disk, instead of spidering wikipedia :) (To spider wikipedia, there had to be a 2-5s wait, between retreiving pages.... multiply that by 2,000,000 :) It was gonna take MONTHS to run....) The list, is actually done now, at 16,320 (IIRC) pages that look broken. I've already got a great team of people helping out now, too! :) Man, you had a great idea, on this one! Thanks! :) SQL(Query Me!) 05:50, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
It would be better if the References section is inserted before External links, instead of simply appending it to the very end of the article. As per WP:MOSHEAD#Standard_appendices, the section ordering is not arbitrary. -- Bovineone 01:50, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

reference bot

Thanks for putting together the User:SQL/Reflist. I have been mulling over doing this, but have yet to come up with a 100% solution on the actual placement of the ==References== and {{reflist}}. The suggestions at the bot requests as to the actual placement within the article is the real problem. Given the plethora of templates being used, putting it just above the [[category:* doesn't work - it should go above the stub templates and other specialized templates. I was contemplating just below ==External links==, but that's not used consistently either. Any suggestions? My fear is that this is going to have to be a "semi-automated", with the user picking the appropriate place given the other items that are in the article :( SkierRMH 01:23, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

I didn't know until yesterday, but, apparently the manual of style covers this :) Even, exactly where :) Thanks for your help! SQL(Query Me!) 01:53, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

I was hoping to complete this run before the db dump got under way.... The current method is fine. Rich Farmbrough, 11:14 12 September 2007 (GMT).

Template:Infobox Settlement has a comment line containing an empty pair of ref tags. YO might want to exclude that (empty refs) from your scan. Rich Farmbrough, 22:42 12 September 2007 (GMT).

P.S. I am dubious about removing an empty reflist, unless there's some other referencing mechanism in place. Even then, the <refernces /> entity does no harm. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rich Farmbrough (talkcontribs) 16:23, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Look up?

There is a conversation going at User talk:^demonBot2#Unreferenced sections I asked ^demon to write a bot to change {{unreferenced}} to {{refimprove}} when certain condition existed, but it turns out I over looked something and now I need to go find every time ^demonBot2 changed "unreferenced" to "refimprove" when it was followed by "|section". User:Agyle has volunteered to have a shot at looking but I am not sure if they are experienced at checking Wikipedia. Could you look in on the conversation, and provide direction or run a query as needed? Jeepday (talk) 03:45, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll see what I can do :) BTW, how necessary is it, that ^demonBot2 made the change? (The DB dump, with full contribs is HUGE :P) If possible, It would be easier, to look for a specific pattern inside an article :) I've only got a 20GB drive in that machine at the moment.... SQL(Query Me!) 05:40, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
you would have to look in the live system as the edits just got made. the first one is 18:07, 19 September 2007 (hist) (diff) Cuisine of the United States‎ (removing {{unreferenced}} if contains at least one reference, replacing with {{refimprove}}) They are all lined up nicely in the user contributions list. Can you just check the article recently edited by ^demonBot2? Or do you need to wait for the next data dump to run a query? Jeepday (talk) 12:46, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
This explains why my runs were skipping so many: don't worry about this I have already fixed the template so that this is not a problem. Rich Farmbrough, 09:27 22 September 2007 (GMT).

My bad, a little FYI, and a question.

Sorry about the AAAAAAA thing. I've taken it off my page. And, BTW, I change my status manually, so the StatusBot not working isn't really an issue for me.

Oh, hey, I'm not exactly sure if you're a genius at this, but... I need to use {{Currenttime}} for something (on my userpage). Anyways, I don't want to have anything on it except the time. I was wondering if you could code it so it only has the time (subst it, then code it from there). If you could, I'd appreciate it. MITB LS 23:27, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

This might work better for ya! :P {{CURRENTTIME}} (Gives you 03:54) and, it can be substed :) (Caps matter :) it's a built-in wiki function) SQL(Query Me!) 09:47, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
How do I code it so it has the time in my location? (I live in Portland, Oregon, so the DST is -7. The standard offset is -8) MITB LS 15:11, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I think I've got it :P {{User:SQL/Time|-7}} for instance. The option is the offset that you want :) Feel free to steal it! :) SQL(Query Me!) 05:34, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
It looks good... the only problem is that it's too spaced out whenever I put text before it (I'm trying to put a little indicator that says "The current time in my location is [the time]"). Is it possible to put it so it's not so paced out, or is the "selfref" template designed that way? MITB LS 05:49, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Lemme take a look :)

The time is User:SQL/Time SQL(Query Me!) 05:50, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah... as matter a fact, I do have one more question: I have a set of templates HERE. I'm waiting to finalize these music templates to add them to the Wikipedia music articles. The thing is that the headers are not aligned with the main body of the template. I want the headers to align with the body (not the body align with the header). Could you fix that? You're welcome. I'm not sure your RfA will pass this time, to be honest, but please don't be put off. If it fails just keep up the good work, and try spending some time at WP:XFD. As I said at RfA what you have done so far is great. Pedro |  Chat  10:48, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Heh, no biggy, see above :) I really appreciate the tips, and, encouragement, again, btw :) SQL(Query Me!) 10:52, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi there. A useful piece of experience for a RfA is having experience of deletion discussions. What about adding one of the categories of discussions that interest you to your watchlist? You can find them at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion#Categorized_discussions. All the best Tim Vickers 22:33, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! :) I'll make sure I do that. RFA aside, we probably need more eyes there anyhow.... last AFD I put through had to be re-listed for lack of responses, and, IIRC, the one before that only had 2-3... same with the one before that... Anyhow, thank you again for the advice! :) SQL(Query Me!) 05:43, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Not a problem, if I can help with anything else just drop a note on my talk page. As a note, if this RfA doesn't pass I would be happy to re-nominate you in a few months, possibly after Wikipedia:Admin coaching? Tim Vickers 18:13, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome

I'll check that list. If anyone thinks that admins are on some kind of power trip rather than just janitors - just think back on what you and I are spending our time on tonight (CA time) and how "powerful" it makes us feel. LOL! Carlossuarez46 05:40, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I hope I got them all. Funny in the "odd" rather than the "haha" sense. Yes, people are very quick to give half-thought through accusations and nasty comments - even long term editors and even admins - like the nasties being hurled at me currently at a DRV discussion: like if half of the merits of the article deleted were true, how come no one has recreated it with all those and the supposed huge number of sources? hmmm. No let's just pound on Carlos instead :-). Some people like drama instead. Fine. Like flippant emails and text messages you'd send your friends but these get seen by lots of people. If I sent an email to some friend who shined on a commitment - I'd likely call him/her a flake or an a-hole. Only they see that and can tell from the source the strength of the admonition. Here, we're all strangers - some people may not be who they say they are or know what they say they know and admins get the brunt of the criticism because they have the power to block, delete, protect, and are supposedly part of some huge cabal conspiracy but we argue like a big family and when you join us you'll find out that the family is more like the sopranos than the brady bunch. Meow. It's late and I'm venting, but c'est la vie. Carlossuarez46 06:11, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Richard Morley (Oregon Politician)

Hi-- thanks for alerting me that Richard Morley (Oregon Politician) would be deleted. It happened before I could take a look, so I'm wondering: could you send me the content that was previously on the page, so I can evaluate whether some of it should be merged to another page, like the Libertarian Party of Oregon? Thanks -Pete 05:56, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I wish I could, but, I'm not an administrator (I gave you the content last time by asking one), if it helps, you can either ask at WP:DRV, or, you can ask the admin that deleted it, User:Prolog. I'd ordinarily ask for you, but, I've gotta get a couple things done real quick. Thank you! :) SQL(Query Me!) 06:01, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
I didn't realise, but, I've already answered this question... It was redir'ed to Richard Morley (Oregon politician) prior to deletion :) SQL(Query Me!) 06:02, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Happy to ask the closing admin, and thanks for tracking down who that was. But, I'm confused by your second answer -- the page was redirected to itself?? I don't understand… -Pete 07:01, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh wait, I see now -- capitalization. I'll ask the other closing admin. Thx. -Pete 07:02, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

You're a sysop!

Hi, SQL/Archives/2007/September, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop!

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, block anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on articles for deletion for more than 5 days (provided there's a consensus), protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=
PS Please add you name to WP:LA!

Thanks! I'll check it out! :) SQL(Query Me!) 04:55, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Can I remove the "Speedy deletion" template from...

My Anywhere.FM entry? Or should I leave it there?

Thanks.

Oh, by the way... You don't have to delete your prior comment, doing so, kind of makes it hard for others to follow the conversation :) I went ahead and replaced it for ya! SQL(Query Me!) 06:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

I've read some of the cite page, including the part about "How to Cite". But I'm still not sure where to place the cites on my entry. Can you please place a sample Cite on my entry?

Zageron 06:10, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks.

Zageron 06:29, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I was just going in there to correct them! But then they were gone! haha. Thanks A couple questions.

1. What do I use to cite an email? 2. What if it IS from personal experience and I have had conversations with the Admins, and they agree with me. 3. Again what is Notability? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zageron (talkcontribs) 06:47, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Block

..... bah! beat me to it. Do you want to look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kolum sewell. We may as well delete, it was created by the account you just blocked. I'm involved but as you haven't commented you can close the debate early if you fancy. Belated congrats on the buttons BTW...Pedro :  Chat  09:23, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

It was a regretful neutral, and I'm pleased you got the buttons. Heck we need more admins!. Happy editing. Pedro :  Chat  09:54, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi. I just wanted to thank you for the speedy block of Kayteepirate this morning. -- JediLofty User ¦ Talk 09:23, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Talk Page Deletions

G8 all day long, you just need to reference the AFD in the deletion to back it up (i.e. there is a record of the deletion discussion elsewhere hence G8 applies). I've done it, so no worries. Pedro :  Chat  09:57, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Opera Mini IPs

Hi SQL. I do quite a lot of my editing via Opera Mini on my PDA, and I am not the only one. There shouldn't be any need to range block - once you start using Opera Mini, an IP gets assigned and it stays the same for a reasonably long time unless you can be bothered uninstalling and reinstalling Opera Mini (IPs stay the same on the order of weeks, though - so a block of about a month is usually sufficient).

Also, please block these IPs anon-only wherever possible, as they are shared by many people. Neil  11:22, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Anywhere.FM entry (acceptable?)

I've recently added some information to Anywhere.fm but I'm not sure if it is acceptable. Can you please review it?
