The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format. It was created by Adobe Systems in 1993. They made it to make it easier to exchange documents. PDF can be used for 2 dimensional documents. The document is stored in such a way that it does not depend on a certain screen (or printer) resolution. Documents can have text, images and fonts in them.
PDF is an open standard. It is currently being prepared to be made an ISO standard.[1].
