Hot chocolate (which is also called hot cocoa, or drinking chocolate) is a kind of drink. Usually it is served hot. It is made by mixing hot milk with melted chocolate or cocoa powder and sugar.

Hot chocolate drinks were popular in Mexico, where the beverage was served with pepper and spices. Hot cocoa became popular in Europe after chocolate was introduced from the New World. Heavy cream is used in hot chocolate recipes to achieve a thick consistency. Spanish hot chocolate is made by adding corn flour to the hot milk and chocolate powder mix. A chocolate dip is achieved by adding a large amount of corn flour to the mix. In Europe they are a delicacy.

Hot cocoa mixed with hot coffee is called mocha. Hot cocoa is often served with a marshmallow on top. Some restaurants serve hot cocoa with whipped cream. Some bars serve hot cocoa mixed with alcoholic beverages such as brandy or whiskey.
