AH1 is the longest route of the Asian Highway Network, running 12,845 miles (20,557km) from Tokyo, Japan via Korea, China, Southeast Asia and India to the border between Iran ,Turkey and Bulgaria west of Istanbul.

The 750-mile (1200-kilometer)[1] section in Japan was added to the system in November 2003.[2] It runs along the following tolled expressways:
- Route 3 (Shibuya Line) of the Shuto Expressway in Tokyo
- Tomei Expressway, Tokyo to Nagoya[3]
- Meishin Expressway, Nagoya to Osaka via Kyoto
- Chūgoku Expressway, Osaka to Shimonoseki
- Kanmonkyo Bridge, Shimonoseki to Kitakyushu
- Kyūshū Expressway, Kitakyushu to Fukuoka
- Routes 4 and 1 of the Fukuoka Expressway in Fukuoka
From Fukuoka, AH1 takes the Camellia Line ferry to Pusan, South Korea. The Japan-Korea Tunnel has been proposed to provide a fixed crossing.
